We enjoy good cookie dough Blue Bunny cookie dough ice cream from time to time but my wife said you can't even get it anymore. I went to the Ice Cream section in Hy-Vee and couldn't believe Blue Bunny hardly has any true "Ice Cream" anymore. All but 2-3 varieties are labeled (in very non-discrete print) "Frozen Dairy Dessert" instead of "Ice Cream".

This "Frozen Dairy Dessert" stuff is not good. Anybody know what is going on? Is this a form a shrinkflation? A shame that an Iowa company has compromised the quality they have always been known for.

More akin to slime than ice cream. Go ahead and try it but I noticed sometime was off the last time my wife came home with cookie dough and noticed nowhere does the packaging claim it to be ice cream.

Has to do with milk fat.....must hit a certain percent to be labeled ice cream. Less fat = have to label it something else.

There are some specific rules about what you can call "ice cream". I think a lot of it is the fat content has to be at least a certain amount

Walmart's Great Value ice cream is unironically very good and way cheaper.
Interestingly enough, I believe Great Value is actually made by Wells Blue Bunny in Le Mars. At least the stuff sold in the Midwest. I know a guy who worked there and he said that all they do is switch the container when they do Great Value vs. their own brand.

Lol. I edited my post. There's a reason I know. Friend of mine worked there.

This is the story for any generic brand food. Hy-Vee loafs of bread are just Sara Lee loafs that didn't look perfect. I never buy name brand bread, pasta or pasta sauce because it's the same stuff at a 30% mark up.

I'm not against buying generic, but it's not always good just because it's made by a company that also makes name brand stuff. A lot of the name brand stuff is garbage as well so I don't want it at full or generic brand prices.

Had to look at ice cream in my freezer which is blue bunny. Sure enough frozen dairy dessert. I've never noticed any change to product from a taste pov.
