Vikings Near-Metrodome stadium site pushed

There is a lot of work being done behind the scenes by the Vikings, the city of Minneapolis and the Legislature to prepare for the possibility of a stadium vote in the next two weeks.
The chance of this happening will be contingent on favorable action being taken by the Minneapolis City Council and the Legislature.
The only site on the table now is the one adjacent to the Metrodome. The plan is similar to what was done in St. Louis, when the latest Busch Stadium was built for the Cardinals. The Vikings would continue to play in the Metrodome while about 75 percent of the stadium would be built on the current Metrodome parking lot and land east of 11th Avenue South. The stadium could be built over the Elliot Park Substation owned by Xcel Energy.
Vikings vice president of public affairs and stadium development Lester Bagley has been meeting with University of Minnesota authorities on a regular basis to work out a plan for the Vikings to play at TCF Bank Stadium for one season while the final 25 percent of the stadium is built. This could happen if the stadium site is moved just east of the Metrodome.
The stadium would be modeled after Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, which just hosted the Super Bowl.
Mayor R.T. Rybak has made a great proposal for the city of Minneapolis, but if the city council won't cooperate, we will probably see the Vikings move like the Lakers and North Stars did when decent facilities weren't available.
This is an opportunity for some 7,500 local jobs but knowing the personality of this city council, which rarely does anything constructive when it comes to sports, I look for them to be blamed two or three years down the line for the loss of the Vikings. Then they will build a stadium that will cost four or five times more to get an expansion team.

Not trying to take this off-topic but the STL city's recent proposal to the Rams took the Rams off guard. Very very solid and certainly greatly improved chances of keeping Rams in STL -- another midwest town keeping their team would be great -- back on track ........ sort of -- I still have trouble with Minn/St Paul losing the north stars ...... biggest tragedy in sports relocation.

Yep, we all know how much they love hockey in the great state of Texas.

Glad to hear that the Rams are less likely to move back to LA though.

Save money, don't have a roof! :jimlad:.
Honestly though, as a Vikings fan I would love to being playing outdoors again. I mean..we are the Vikings..but I know that will never happen (other than a season at the U to get the new stadium up).
Just think it'd be cool to go back to the good old days of the met. But I couldn't care less as long as they stay.

When I was an undergrad -- 1971 - 1975 we would drive up once each year for a game in the Vet. Never been colder!!! What a great time!!

The new Vikings stadium will have a roof. If Indianapolis and Detroit get to host Super Bowls, Minneapolis will want that capability as well, especially since they have done so in the past. Yes, they scrapped the roof at Target Field, but the motivation for building a roof is saving a handful of games in a given year. There is more at stake with a roofed football stadium.

The 2014 Super Bowl is in New York... a cold weather stadium. I believe the rule that states the SB must be in a warm/indoor climate will be reevaluated after the 2014 game. I'd expect more cold weather SBs after that.

And I agree... It'll most likely be a domed stadium.

Sidenote: Did you hear Duluth made a pitch for the Vikings Stadium?

There's also a gigantic difference between New York and Minneapolis in February in terms of weather. If the New York Super Bowl works, they're not going to play a Super Bowl at Lambeau Field as a result, and the size of Green Bay has nothing to do with it - the fear of having Ice Bowl II does, and that is also a very real possibility at an open-air stadium in Minneapolis as well.

It seems like there has had so many stops and starts. I hope this get taken care of this time...they are running out of time. Also, glad to see they are back downtown.

So anyone know what the chances are of this getting done and what the "deadlines" are for having a plan in place?
