I'll be honest; I assumed they were all sudden-death. That would make the most sense to me.

The first playoff at the Masters was actually a 36 hole playoff. They went to an 18 hole playoff format after that until 1976 when they changed it to sudden death.

The PGA championship had an 18 hole playoff also until 1976 when they moved to a sudden death format for three years. They then went to a 3-hole aggregate in 1980.

The Open had a 36 hole playoff format until 1970 which it then changed to an 18 hole format. The change to a 4-hole aggregate was made in 1989.

Too bad they did not decide to really stir things up with a 2-5 hole match play format--but it is not a match play tournament, so I understand not going that direction. I get the time issue, and the networks probably are not too keen on a four hour window on a Monday for a playoff.

I still think for a major there can be--and should be--more than sudden death like on regular tour stops.

Not exactly sure.
I think a 9 hole playoff would be a good set up. Would be another day, but not a drawn out affair like an 18 hole would be. Even a 6 hole would give some strategy to the whole thing.

Completely agree. A major should not be decided in sudden death.

'Splain this to me Lucy; does 2-hole aggregate mean if there is a tie at the end of the two hole play off, they repeate the same two holes until one gets a lower score ??? Yuck.

If still tied after the 2-hole playoff, it goes to sudden death.

I wish they would just change the scoring to a Modified Stableford system for the whole tournament.
