I've been trying to keep up with all this stuff but have been gone the last few days...where is this Shrine located at and how do you get there? Is this linked with where the 2 girls were killed by a car or something in northwest ames?

I'm interested in going out there and looking at it
This thread has only been going since yesterday, and it's a pretty damn good read. Just go back to page 1 and read the whole thing. It's really interesting, you'll learn a lot, AND you'll get all caught up on all the different things we've been talking about!

Somebody better call Boone County and tell them they better upgrade their road with all this Shrine CF traffic going out there.:biglaugh::biglaugh:

I don't want to let this thread die, it's awesome!

This doesn't compare to the crazy shrine house or nuclear explosions, but I always thought the tiers in the library were strange. Ducking behind stairwells and sneaking between skinny isles. Sometimes it felt like you were in a part of the library that nobody had been in for years. I never did, but have several friends that, uh, 'explored' the tiers with thier girlfriends.

We have a pretty well known Non-destructive Evaluation program out there now

Ran into some people the other day that recognized my Iowa State shirts, said they've been out there for that a number of times. These are guys in industry out in Maryland telling me we have a good program there

Pretty much world-renowned. If there's an airline crash in the U.S., you can bet that some people from NDE are flying out to examine the wreckage. They do work for NASA and the military too.

I heard someone hung themselves in one of the tiers years ago in the evening and he wasn't fond until noon the next day. Seriously, I'm not making it up- one of the officers told me that one time.

Could you imagine being the 19 year old student with an index card in hand trying to find some book in a tier you never knew existed, then seeing that??? Holy crap.

I just drove by the "Shrine" 10 minutes ago. I was going to go slow and take a pic with the phone but the guy was standing right there! He was in the ditch burning something. Old guy kinda skinny wearing a hooded sweatshirt under a coat. He turned and looked so I waved! ha ha.
I was surprised at how close to the road it actually was. Damn it I need to drive by again slower next time. I could tell that it needs a fresh paint job though.

Thats exactly what he was doing when I saw him! (4.5 years ago). He was burning stuff in the ditch on the east side of the shrine

Because they call the guy the "shriner", and he has a white van, i'm guessing he looks something like this....

Take a picture of the guy, while you are at it.

I always had a great time poking around in the tiers (not the way you implied), always found something interesting to read. I actually found an old masters thesis written by my great uncle in the 1930s.

I think Jeremy needs to add a "Cyclone Lore" section on CF. It would be pretty active during the sports dry spells. And by dry spells I mean football season. I kid, I kid.
