Why don't we just have the next planned Cyclone Fanatic Tailgate at this Shrine place?
Ill bring beer and a bible.

Perfect, I'll bring brats and my fists...just in case the crazy old man shows up and wants to throw down. I'll introduce him to The Honorable Judge Richard Allenby and Shemp McGilly...my left and right fists. Seriously, though, bostinelosd, do you want to go there with me this weekend?
Are there tunnels underneath the Lincoln Way/Welch intersection or somewhere around there because I remember hearing stories from my dad that he had a friend that lived in the basement of I think the old Peoples and they could get into tunnels down there and wonder (this would have been in the 70's). Would these be the steam tunnels everyone talks about?
If I do attempt to go into the shrine, I'm at least bringing 20 people with.
After watching the vids above this one came up on youtube of a great vid of the shrine

YES! We drove past at night... it is spooooky!
uranium, actually. I believe a group associated with iowa state (spedding and wilhelm?) developed a way to enrich the uranium from U-238 to U-235. Chemistry professor told us in class one day a whole lot about it. Apparently they used the back stairwell in Gilman to do it. The one to the north of the big lecture hall. Whether it was an enrichment column or stairwell first, i don't know. But apparently there are pictures of guys with buckets of uranium standing on top of gilman above this column. That's what I remember him saying anyways. How much is true, who knows. Lots of uranium in and out of ames by rail.....Later on, one of them had a professor who said that after the Manhattan Project, they dumped a bunch of plutonium or something out there and were finally cleaning it up some 45 years later.
No wonder Gilman looks like it got hit by an atomic bomb... :cute:uranium, actually. When I was there in the early 90s, I had some friends that went biking somewhere west of campus. They came across a big sign from the U.S. Dept of Energy (I think) warning people to stay at least 20 feet away. Being idiots, they kept going and ended up seeing a bunch of dudes in hazmat suits carrying trays around. Later on, one of them had a professor who said that after the Manhattan Project, they dumped a bunch of plutonium or something out there and were finally cleaning it up some 45 years later.
Between 1942 and 1945, almost two million pounds of uranium was processed on campus.
"We knew it was special, we knew it was very special," Svec said. "Iowa State College was producing not only hogs in tonnage quantities, but also pure uranium metal for the Manhattan Project."
Love it. How can you not love ISU.
bostinelosd....you MAY have just turned this thread into a "zombie-plan" thread....we may start spiraling out of control shortly.....![]()
