Hello again everyone! Who else is ready for football season to begin?

We're just over 3 weeks away from the start of a new season so I'm hoping I can start this thread and not be crucified like PondBuffalo from NDSU who started his game thread what felt like years before the season opener last year.

I'm expecting another good game between the Panthers and the Cyclones. Our offense will look very different than the last trip to Ames two years ago for a couple reasons: 1.) No David Johnson; 2.) We have a new offensive coordinator this year who wants to run an up-tempo, no huddle, spread offense -- we'll see how that goes, especially in the 1st game against a Big 12 team. Kollmorgen is a senior at quarterback, but is competing against 2-3 others for the starting job. While David Johnson is gone, we have Rutgers transfer Savon Huggins, KU transfer Darrian Miller, and Iowa transfer Barkley Hill at running back. We'll have a pretty young receiving core as well this year. Offensive line may be a question mark too early in the season.

Defensively I expect us to be solid again just like last year. Our defensive secondary may be the best that we've had in a while at UNI with Deiondre Hall, Tim Kilfoy, and Makinton Dorleant all returning. Brett McMakin, Ronelle McNeil, and Isaac Ales should all wreak havoc on opposing QBs this season. I would say LB is probably our biggest question mark on defense, but I'm not too worried about it. Schmadeke and Bieghler will be very good again on special teams.

Overall, I expect UNI to have another decent year again if they can survive the brutal start to their schedule. They open at Iowa State, host Eastern Washington (#5 or #6 in most FCS preseason polls), go to Cal Poly (Top 25 caliber FCS team), and then open MVFC play at National Title runner-up Illinois State and then at the defending four-time National Champs North Dakota State. A brutal first 5 games for an FCS team.

I don't follow ISU football very close, but certainly more than UI-AIB, so I'm looking for some insight into your expectations for this game and the upcoming season. If I had to make a prediction right now, based on us having a new offensive system and unsure at the QB position I'd take ISU to win 27-14.

Good luck this year (after the season opener)! No matter who wins, I hope both teams can come out of the game healthy and have a good season. GO PANTHERS! Go Cyclones! #BeatIowa!

There's a lot weighing on this game. Lose and the torch mob will be in full force (I'll be among them). 2 in a row vs UNI and 3 vs the FCS. I won't be surprised if Vegas has the Panthers favored in this one. Hopefully it ends up like 2004 where ISU rebounded from a two win season to win the Independence Bowl.

I dont think any cyclone fan will look past an fcs opponent again.

As far as the game goes, it will be interesting to see if the isu offense is really improved or of they are too conservative like they have been at other times against fcs teams.

The isu defense will be much improved in my opinion but if you can't score you can lose any game.

If uni looks good defensively early then it's going to be a tight game again.

Barkley Hill plays Linebacker now and will probably start in the middle.

I'm with him though, should be a good game and I think we can all agree when I say F*** Iowa.

Three week out prediction-- Iowa State 28 UNI 21. I don't think UNI's new offense is going to keep the defense off the field enough.

Our Defense will give up more than 14 points. If ISU wins, it will be because the offense took a step forward.

Heart says ISU wins 41-24

Brain says....ISU wins 24-23...with a VERY good chance at a loss.

I was not aware of that. Thanks!

Classy post and glad to have you on here for discussion. My heart says ISU wins, but the last two years scare me to thinking otherwise.

I'll be disappointed if ISU only gets 28. I think we'll give up points, but I expect the passing game to get more than 1 TD per quarter.

That is until the entire starting o-line goes down with injury.

OP: can you give us a breakdown of UNI's depth chart? I can't find one anywhere online.

I'm happy to give you the offensive side of the ball.

OFFENSE-

QB- 4 way 'battle' between RS SR Sawyer Kollmorgen, Illinois Transfer Aaron Bailey, JUCO transfer Dalton Demos, RS Freshman Eli Dunne. I expect it to be Bailey as he is the dual threat that Farley tends to like. Was a 4-star out of HS.

RB-Deep Group led by Savon Huggins (Rutgers Transfer), SR Darrian Miller and RS SO Tyvis Smith. Deep talented group. There's no David Johnson, but this group will be very good.

WR--This is the big question mark on offense. SO Daurice Fountain should be the leader, but also look for Marcus Weymiller and Rod Hall (Clemson's Starting PG last year) to contribute. Don't know how the pieces fit into the new system.

OL--Experienced, Solid. Infused with some JUCO transfers. UNI is always pretty good up front and I don't expect that to change.

PK--Michael Schmadeke is a First Team All American and only missed one kick last year (Desperation 57 yarder into a 25 mile an hour wind at Indiana State) If it comes down to a kick, UNI has a clear advantage. League's all time leader in points in a season. Most likely kicking in the NFL at this time next year.

Thank you. Is defense still up in the air? Doesn't Farley have like 17 sons all playing linebacker?
