Coach Geno Auriemma says WBB would be more exciting if more layups were made:

“Let’s say the average men’s player is 6-foot-5 and the average woman is 5-foot-11,†Auriemma said. “Let’s lower the rim seven inches, let’s say 7.2 inches to honor Title IX. If you lower it, the average fan likely wouldn’t even notice it. Now there would be fewer missed layups because the players are actually at the rim [when they shoot]. Shooting percentages go up. There would be more tip-ins.â€

I would tend to dismiss the idea if it came from anyone but a legend in the sport. Do you think he will have support from other coaches? Do you think it would help the game? I don't know that it would necessarily help us, but we are already a school that supports our WBB program. Obviously we are in a better position than most schools.

When you think about it it's kind of strange that women that aren't as tall and can't jump as high have the rims at the same height as men.

I agree with this. It also makes a lot more sense why there's so much less dunking in WBB. It sort of makes the sport more boring.

I wouldn't be offended by this if I were a college WBB player. Women are just shorter overall, it's just the way it is.

Is this because of a softball shortage caused by inclement weather in Equatorial Guinea?
yes, i feel like we already had a thread dedicated to the horrible shortage of softballs due to a poor yield this year, and the migrant labor strike didnt help either.

they use a smaller ball too, the rim should be lowered and made smaller.

Yeah, I forgot to include that in my original post. Women do already use a smaller ball than MBB does, so while it may seem insulting to lower the hoop, there are already differences in the equipment used to play the game.

It's a good argument that makes sense. Two comments:

1) You have to set a standard in younger years and all middle and high schools will need adjustable height rims.

2) don't they use a smaller basketballs?

i'll agree with whatever Fennley wants.

My high school Boy's BB team was comprised of short kids of primarily German decent (i.e. short, stubby, no jumping ability), and our tallest player was 6 ft. We routinely had to play teams with much taller kids of Norwegian and Dutch decent. In retrospect, Geno is right. It was totally unfair that we had to play on rims the same height as those other taller teams. They could dunk to get the crowd involved, and we didn't have that advantage. What should have been done was that the our rim should have been set lower (or the other team's rim set higher) by the average height difference between the teams.

I don't think it will happen because it would have to happen EVERYWHERE to keep shooting form consistent across all *competitive* levels of play.

Even at your local gym, basket heights would need to change and I doubt that would happen.

Too much involved to have separate basket heights between genders. In theory it sounds great. Logistically, it doesn't. It's not like going out and buying a separate bag of women's balls to use.
