The 1980 Purdue final four team had the weirdest coaching situation of any team that has made it that far. Lee Rose only coached two years. Hated the AD. Threatened to leave after the first year. After the final four, he left and the players said good riddance.

I think that was the last year of playing the 3rd place game as well. Purdue beat Iowa in that.
