AMES, Iowa – The intrastate collegiate athletics competition between Iowa State University and the University of Iowa – the HyVee Cy-Hawk Series – gets a boost in 2007-08 with the addition of three new sports to the scoring formula.
Officials at the two schools agreed to add men’s golf and men’s and women’s cross country to the competition. Thirteen events will now be included (volleyball was added last year for the first time), with each meeting counting for two points. The lone exception is football in which the winning squad earns three. There is also one academic point available for graduating student-athletes at a higher percentage than the undergraduate population.
The men’s golf teams meet annually at the Big Four Meet (along with Drake and Northern Iowa) and the cross country teams compete in the same NCAA Regional each fall. The top finishing team in those three meets will earn the points.
The schools have alternated victories in the three-year-old event and the UI holds a 2-1 series advantage.
