Do you say the same thing about Jon Heacock's kid?

Thomas makes $42k a year, this is a kid with a masters degree in Information Systems and Business Analytics. He could easily be making a LOT more money in the private sector.
There are very strict rules about nepotism that every department at the university must follow, except the Athletic Department. It smells bad no matter wherever it occurs, even at our own university.

I really like Jamie Pollard, and while I don't know Thomas Pollard, I have no doubt he's a wonderful young man. It just smells bad when Jamie's son is given a position in the Athletic Department. No, it's not the same as Bill Fennally giving his son an assistant coaching position, but it still smells bad to me.
So both Tamin Lipsey's parent's work for ISU. Should he be able to get a scholarship to ISU?

There are a lot of multi-generations families working at ISU. As long as he doesn't report directly to Jamie- whats the issue? Data analytics is a growth field in all kinds of industries- so it is a great experience for Thomas.

Be Happy for young people who chose to live & work in Iowa after college. They need to stick around so that Iowa is a great place to live when I retire!!!

It sounds like this is pretty much a nothingburger as far as nepotism goes. He's more than qualified and not at all being compensated beyond merit (less if anything), etc.

That said I'll stand by my earlier claim that the optics aren't good. I don't care who it is, if it's bigger than a mom/pop operation and you work for daddy, people are going to roll their eyes and make assumptions. I'd bet a nickel that the pollards have had a discussion about the optics of him getting that job.

Not even close to the same situation. Lipsey's parents worked at ISU well before their son was recruited. And it's obvious Tamin was recruited for his abilities, not his last name.

Jamie is the director of the department. He's in a position of power over everyone in the department, including the person who made the hiring decision.

You don't think a dual major 4.0 with a masters was maybe hired for his abilities?

I'm the biggest ISU fan you can find, and I already said I'm sure Thomas is a wonderful young man, but doesn't change the fact that he's the son of the department head. It would smell bad in any other setting, and it's no different just because it's the Athletic Department.

Thomas' dad worked for ISU long before Thomas was recruited and accepted a scholarship to ISU. Thomas was a 10x academic All-Big 12 athlete and his degree program was Information Systems & Business Analytics. Ya Think he might be qualified?

There are a lot of CEO's whose kids work for the same public company. As long as there isn't a direct reporting relationship- what's the issue. Jamie is the CEO of the Athletic Department- so technically every employee and student athlete he is in a position of power over! I am sure Iowa State has Human Resource policies to address employment of family members and I bet Thomas employment adheres to that policy.
