Back when I was a freshman in high school, two students were in driving ed driving in a lightning storm and the car got struck by lightning and went straight through the vehicle and blew out all 4 tires and fried all the electrical, it didn't hurt anyone in the vehicle luckily.

That would be insane. I've never had a lighting bolt strike closer than a few hundred yards away from me. I thought it was common knowledge that you're grounded and safe inside a car if a lightning bolt strikes, though.

I've been about 30 feet from a tree when it got hit. It literally exploded from the inside, showering wood pieces all over the deck and roof. One of the louder things I've ever heard.

I think the logic says that you are NOT grounded, and therefore safe inside a car.

Been close to a couple trees, as previously described in this thread. Unbelievable.

It's not the rubber tires from the car that keep you safe. If that was the case, the car wouldn't get struck at all.

Rather, it's the car's metal frame that channels the electric current around you and to the ground.

But yes, you are more safe (but not 100%) sitting in your car than you are standing outside.
