There are a few key things this team is missing right now.

- Someone to make an effective post feed. I think once we get Wes, and hopefully Staiger, back this problem will take care of itself. Right now our small guards are harassed to the point where they can't get the ball into the post. Wes and Lucca will be able to pass over the top of whomever is guarding them.

- Someone to get a shot off the dribble. Garret is helping to alleviate this problem, but he is still learning, and needs time to grow into this role. Getting Wes back will definitely help here, and he has the size a quick first step to get to the rack.

- The ability to make teams pay for pressuring the ball. We simply do not have the quickness on the team to make teams pay with the dribble. So what do we do? We need to use our size to pass over the top. Again, getting Wes and Lucca will help allot here, as they have the size to pass over the top.

- Someone to facilitate the offense. Right now our half-court offense is terrrible. This is because we don't have any really good passers on the floor. Once again, enter Wes and Lucca.

I guess my whole point here is that not only will Wes, and to a lesser extent Lucca, help with individual talent and scoring, they also help make the other players around them better. You can have a sports car capable of doing 200 mph, but if you remove the fuel injection system, it doesn't matter how great the rest of the vehicle is, its not going to run. You need all the pieces. Once we get them, we will be fine.

Hey, we can only get better by XMAS. Right? These games are just tryouts for all the new players. Six of the other Big 12 teams are rated in the Top 30. We are now #172. Strength of schedule will skyrocket in January. We will see big improvement when we hit TV.

We have three tiers in Big 12 right now. Six in Top Tier, three in middle tier, and three of us in Bottom Tier: Colorado, Nebraska and ISU. No surprise according to the media. It will be a learning experience. We only lose two high minute playing seniors and we will reload. Let's have fun for now. Let's not lose to Iowa and Art Linkletter.

I think you're absolutely right, snowcraig. I think the addition of Wesley Johnson and (hopefully) Staiger could make a huge difference to this team, particular in the area of being able to make interior passes. We've got decent bigs, but if the guards can't get them the ball, it doesn't matter.

Another area where Staiger could help immensely would be as a zone buster. Zone defenses are killing us right now.

Exactly. LS hits a few treys, then pretty soon the interior loosens up for CB and Jiri.

Jeremy mentioned in his coach-for-a-day thread that he was impressed with Cameron Lee in practice. I wonder if the coaches will give him a shot at PG.... can't do much worse than what we've seen so far.

His high school stats aren't very eyepopping. At least he should help our team GPA... if walkons count toward that.

Cameron Lee - Iowa State University Athletics Official Web Site - www.CYCLONES.com - Iowa State Cyclones Sports

Cameron is impressive in practice, but what stands out is his defense. I don't recall his handles standing out, but it's a no brainer on defense.

Whats missing is that we have a bunch of Mid Major kids on a Big Twelve team...Except for 3.

Coach needs to turn up the heat....this isn't UNI anymore.

Yeah, we need some comic relief after that sobering assessment. If Wes had been on the court with Lucca we would not have this thread.

THE BOTTLE OF WINE
For all of us who are married, were married, wish they were married, or wish they weren't married, this is something to smile about the next time you see a bottle of wine:
Sally was driving home from one of her business trips in Northern Arizona when she saw an elderly Navajo woman walking on the side of the road.
As the trip was a long and quiet one, she stopped the car and asked the Navajo woman if she would like a ride.
With a silent nod of thanks, the woman got into the car
Resuming the journey, Sally tried in vain to make a bit of small talk with the Navajo woman. The old woman just sat silently, looking intently at everything she saw, studying every little detail, until she noticed a brown bag on the seat next to Sally.
"What in bag?" asked the old woman.
Sally looked down at the brown bag and said, "It's a bottle of wine. I got it for my husband."
The Navajo woman was silent for another moment or two.

Then speaking with the quiet wisdom of an elder, she said:

"Good trade.....

How about a true big12 center. I mean we haven't had one since Homan. Jiri is nice and tries hard but he is really undersized.

Jiri is 6'11" 240 lbs. I wouldn't call that undersized. He is 4 weeks removed from a broken foot.

You don't think Wes is worth a 10 point swing to us? Did you even watch our exhibition games? The team has so much more of a flow to the offense when he is in, not to mention his length on defense and rebounding.

Alex is 6-10 and 250. That is big. However, that said, he may be a little slower than Jiri.

I think you're exactly right. Hopefully Wes heals up quick and the NCAA gets their head out of their A** and allows Lucca to play. We really need these guys.

This Team is Missing 3 Things

And hopefully 2 of those can get back on the court before the Big 12 season starts.

We are missing:

1) A dynamic scorer from the wing. A guy who can put the ball on the floor or shoot the spot up 3 pointer. Wesley should be that guy based on how he played in the exhibition games. His size will allow him to shoot 3's over most 2 guards.

2) A great jump shooter that can get his shot off with a defender in his face. Staiger would seem to fit that description. At 6'5" he has the size that his shot won't get sent back into his face like Peterson and he doesn't need to run through screens to be open.

3) A man child in the post. A guy with a nasty attitude and a rebounding machine. That is the missing link. Not sure if Pomlee is that type of player, but we need it. I wouldn't be against dipping into the JUCO ranks to find such a player for the 08/09 season.
