AMEN! My short 8 mile drive (and that is beyond short for Houston, so I shouldn't complain too much) to work has taken me well over an hour on several occasions.
I will also add in having all 4 seasons. While I do hate winter more than anything in the world we really only have 2 seasons in Houston. Plus we don't get the colors of fall for much more than a day. You blink and you'll miss it.

I plan to move to New England, the Rockies, or the PNW after graduation (hey, there just isn't much for opportunities in the ski business around here), but Iowa will always be home. I complain about it being flat, boring, etc., but when I really think about it I'm glad my parents raised me here. I love it. Now if only there was a nice mountain range nearby I'd be ecstatic!

Walking on Iowa State's central campus in the early fall as the sun rises, College Football, Ragbrai, and small town festivals/carnivals/etc.
I have to ditto the people. As someone who has lived in Chicago and Dallas, which aren't the most unfriendly places (for big cities), Iowa blows them away. The traffic as alluded to is also a nice bonus.

Seriously, as someone who grew up on the west coast, it is definitely the people. The weather here is awful, the flatland nearly drives me crazy at times, and the lack of public lands in Iowa leaves me inside on days when I normally would be outside, and did I say the weather here is awful. There are two things keeping me in Iowa and one of those is the people.
some of you people are delusional.
1. pork. the pork here is far and away 200% better than that i have had anywhere else.
2. the wrestling. as my 2nd favorite sport, this place is like a mecca.
3. the people. just as any rural minded area, though they are not as awesome in ames as they are in the more rural parts of the state.
