I could be dead wrong but I don’t really see what Iowa does as having much of an impact on us.

We rarely compete for the same recruits and recent in-state kids seem ti have their minds made up long before it’s time to commit.

Bilew and Foster maybe an exception, but Tamin, the Sandforts, etc were going to be Hawkeyes or cyclones regardless of the coach.

These recent quad city kids for Iowa were obviously not deciding where to go based on strength of program. Or we didn’t recruit them because they weren’t good enough.

I don’t really see this dynamic changing under DeVries or Fran or anyone else.

They are obviously rivals in general but I don’t think so in terms of recruiting nor in terms of financial support. Not like people are deciding whether to give to We Will or to Swarm.

I guess maybe there is something long term if we have great success over a long period and they’re terrible for long period (like opposite of football in the 80s).

We have one Iowan on our roster if you don't count the one walk-on. Yeah, it's not like football where we compete for players to fill a million man roster.

Very good points. To that effect, I guess a strong Iowa program might cut into good Wisconsin and Minnesota talent that wants to go out of state but might prefer Big 10.
And to that point, Minnesota getting good hurts us too. We actually don't want either program to be good, but obviously pay more attention to Iowa because they're our rival.

Yes and no. Hilton is an off the charts home court. Recruits see that and they always talk about it. That hole in the ground in eastern Iowa can get loud but it’s no where near Hilton, or some other big 10 venues for that matter. That will always be an advantage to us.

They had Gilmore at 7'-2" (right) and Pembrook Burrows III 7'-0" (center) for more size than a NBA team today. Burrows scored the winning hoop over the Hawks 6' Chad Calabria. Games etched in my memory, hard to forget a a cool name like Pembrock Burrows III.

BTW, I was in my freshman at ISU during that season. Was a glorious hoops year. Got introduced to Cyclone hoops and Bill Cain games in the Old Armory. We won almost every home game and lost every road game but I didn't see any of those road loses. This was all on the heels of Drake being in the Final Four in 1969 so there was a lot of Iowa hoops to love. And on the girls side legendary Denise Long in the 1969 high school tournament.

I think Gilmore beat the Hoks in a regional final.

O/U on butts in seats tonight is at 2000.

Friday night. 8:00 start. 100% fan apathy. Play the under.

After the media flogging of only having 2500 fans at the Minnesota game...more Squawkeye fans will show up for the Penn State game...not way more though...probably around 4000-4500. It's a Friday night. No school tomorrow.

Iowa with a TJ type is recruiting the same type of kids in MN, WI, MI, and IL.

Not a coincidence that our best run occurs when MN and Iowa aren’t threats, and WI continues to have issues with instate AAU

But basketball has always been different than football. We’ve been able to have successful teams recruiting a myriad of areas

Go back a ways in this thread. That's what started that sidebar, the new thin Hawk commit reminded me of the Hawks Glenn "Stick" Vidnovic from that 1970 team.
sorry. Should have went further back. My brother and I got to see the 1970 team. My favorite name is vidnovic.

Even Fran has gone after our type of recruits, his program just hasn’t had much to sell.
these are all fair points. Their programs bring down certainly don’t hurt. I guess I really just don’t see it as a direct threat. Far from mutually exclusive success or zero sum game.

Here is how I see it:

We need 7-8 guys (arguably less if top ones are really talented) to field highly competitive teams. There are hundreds of basketball players out there to recruit at D1 level.

With the portal and with NIL - and with more sustained success - I think our recruiting reach will actually expand.

Right now we’ve got 2 starters and 3 of our top 8 from mountain states or further west.

Obviously Midwest heavy and expect it to be that way. But we’ve also got one foreign recruit signed and another very interested.

Our conference footprint is the largest it’s ever been.

There are so many factors at play. If we can sustain this top 10 or even top 20 with regular tourney appearances I don’t think TJ is going to have any problem getting kids here

It's below 32 degrees out. WAY too cold to venture to an Iowa MBB game.

I wonder if DeVries saw what happened to McDermott at ISU and how he resurrected his career at Creighton. If so, then I wonder if he won’t touch that Iowa job from a 1000 miles.

Not only is Fran going to have a hard time getting an NcAA bid, he is very close to not even qualifying for the Big 10 tournament.
