Didn’t read this thread til today but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Devries took the Iowa job. Zero argument from me that WVU is a better job and has way more NIL resources. But I’m from Aplington as well and while I don’t know him personally, I know a few people that do that have said Iowa is a dream job for him. Been stated in here many times the family ties to Iowa, but I think coaching high major basketball close to family will be a huge draw for him

And I really hope he doesn’t take it cause I enjoyed rooting for him at Drake and have been keeping tabs on WVU this season. I know they’re in conference but I’d still rather have them be good than Iowa

No worries. They won today and Fran got the best recruit in the history of basketball yesterday so hawk fans are 1000% back on board with Fran.

Hear me out on this.

Fran is 65 years old and in his 40th year of coaching. Not much left on his contract and all of his boys are soon to be in Indianapolis.

DeVries has a good thing going at Drake. His son is entering his last year and projected NBA draft pick.

You’ve got to figure that the Iowa job is going to open soon and that you’re going to be top of the list. Do you really leave Drake to move to WV and make your son transfer so you can spend 1-2 years in that job?

Seems like he could have very easily waited where he was.

He took a good job at WVU. That’s been a solid basketball program. They have the resources to win there. It was a good decision on his part.

I totally agree. My post was probably not clear enough. I mean that - if you really want the Iowa job - I don’t think you go take the WVU job when every single sign points to Iowa being open immediately after.

Not sure it’s totally fair to say Iowa is/was clearly going to be open. You said not much left on his contract but after last season he still had four years left on it. And the many times previously mentioned financial issues their athletic department currently faces.

Think there also could’ve been an element of letting Tucker prove it in a power conference to boost his NBA prospects, and getting him his own NIL money.

I’ve just heard from a very trusted source that Devries has called Iowa a dream job so I think ISU fans need to pump the brakes a bit on the “why would he leave a better job?” narrative

I really hope you're right. They are fanatical with their sports in Morgantown. If he wants good fan support, he should stay there. He could also have his eye on a bigger job in the future.

Mad Fran still has three years left on his contract, making over $3 million a year, is recruiting hard for next season, and has made zero comments about retiring and moving away at the end of the season. I would be totally shocked if EIU fired him, they cannot afford the buyout, or he would leave EIU to retire or take another job. Not many coaches want to start over in a new job at his age unless he has been fired from his previous coaching position.
It also puts pressure on DeVries to take the WV job, and then leave after one season, no matter how EIU spins its, that is a bad look.

No …. He “ needed” the prestige of coming from a legit Power conference program, coming from drake wouldn’t have had the WOW factor all suckeyes crave.
Plus….. don’t overlook him swindling another year from the NCAA for his kid

All the sukeye fans are bat **** crazy over the new recruits Franny has recruited recently….. my BIL, even though they ***** about how bad they are are says he’s finally got the “right” players… (you know what they mean by that)
I didn’t tell him these last 2 weren’t that good and basically had been “let go” by the other teams. Yet,….. Fran somehow pulled in a top 40 kid…. Yeah ,… I call ********

Mad Fran came from Sienna, EIU is not in a position to draw a big named coach from an established Power 5 program unless he has ties back to the state. Its why many are wishing they had cut bait with Mad Fran last season, before DeVries took the WV job. Can they get DeVries, I would say yes, but it makes it easier in a year or two then it does after this season. Not many head coaches leave a job they have been successful at for another job up the food chain, and then after one season, leave that job for the same level to below than the one they currently have.

Iowa would have to back up the bank truck to get DeVries. He would and should command 5 million a year or stay put at WVU
