Pretty sad. Makes one wonder if the committee (Tom Hill) really wants to hear possible solutions to big parties getting out of control. Apparently blaming Veishea is easier than putting the blame where it really belongs, on some out of control drunks and making them take responsibility for their actions. Or better yet finding solutions to work with and/or prevent parties from getting out of control. This is the 2nd time in the last 10 years this has been a newsworthy occurrence so it needs to get more attention, but not to over-react.
Lots of arrests and bad things happen tailgating. Better get ride of that too.
I think older generations had it better. The current method for presenting news and immediate need for action has crippled much of what once was.
I thought college age people were once considered grown ups? Glad helicopter parents still think they need to be babysitted.

I don't see much evidence of parents of students being involved in this at all. I'd say it's more a good number of Ames residents who are fed up with so-called "adults" who can't seem to keep their **** together. I'm sorry to all the students who work hard on their exhibits, but like I said before, there's plenty of room at the Boone County Fair next to all the other 4-H projects. VEISHEA has long been a black eye on the town and the University. If they want to try it again in a few years, okay. But if it's gone for good, then good riddance.
I think there are a lot of other effective things that could of been tried (that had not been tried yet) to keep the tradition that is VEISHEA alive. VEISHEA does so many good things for ISU/Ames, ending it for the few bad things that happen with it seems like the easy way out.
I would bet it gets brought back in a few years. Just take a few years off and kind of hit the reset button.
And if you're chanting VEISHEA, VEISHEA, VEISHEA... while watching then you've lost the "it was just a few bad eggs" argument completely.
Doubly so when it happened on a Tuesday.
I love how delusional you are on the subject. Not so much a critique on this post, but overall your responses in this thread. According to you, the only thing veishea is and is good is what happens after midnight. Have fun at the Boone County Fair.

Actually, you've got it wrong. I don't want to go to the Boone County Fair, either. I personally think the exhibits are pretty damned lame, and if the rationale to save VEISHEA is based on the "worth" of these exhibits and/or the parade, then that's a pretty poor argument.
The most delusional argument, however, is that VEISHEA means anything besides a drunken party to the vast majority of its attendees.

When I was in high school we used to go to Ames during VEISHEA to drink/party. Knew nothing about the tradition other than riots on the news in prior years.
While a student (2000-04) at ISU I would guess it as 10% of the students actually cared for the true meaning of VEISHEA. The rest used it as an excuse to party, skip class and a week long drinking haze.
In 2004 during the riot I was there, got tear gassed and witnessed the smashing of light poles, throwing bricks through copy works, etc. And the next morning walked the streets of campus town and it was like a bomb went off. Glass debris all over.
It's sad but to today's youth VEISHEA is more about partying, and full of kids who have seen the national media report past riots during VEISHEA and I truly feel, as dumb as it is, kids want there turn in the spot light. They don't care about 100 years of tradition. They care about a week long party. The Animal House experience.

If that's really what most kids think of Veishea then it's time to make a major effort to change the perception imo.
We better hope that the students don't connect this behavior with football and basketball games. Leath is setting a precedent that will be hard to uphold in other situations. Although perhaps the student tailgate lot takes care of it by keeping the riotous behavior to a grass field.

Many people, mostly older I'm guessing, are still living in the past in their opinions on here about what they believe VEISHEA stands for. Among anyone 40 and under right now, it stands for drinking and partying excessively and rioting in the streets.
