Going to Des Moines tomorrow for the Boys Tourney. I teach at CR Jeff, so I will watch that one, but then I have about a 1-2 hour wait in between until my brother comes down from Ames to watch the Linn Mar game. I'm a big sushi fan and was lookin to grab some lunch. Any suggestions. I found a few sushi places thanks to Google, but I want to know which ones are actually decent. Thanks!

You can take the skywalk to Capital Square. There is a good place there in the skywalk...sorry, I couldn't attempt to tell you what the name is.

Miyabi 9. End of discussion. Right on Grand just down from the capital building. Not a very big place, but the best sushi I have had in the midwest and I eat a LOT of sushi.

Thats what I was lookin for. I love sushi. IMO it brings out the true flavor of the fish, which I love.

Miyabi is hands down the best I've had in the Midwest besides Chicago. I frequent Wok in Motion the most out of anywhere though.

Just my opinion, but they are WAY too heavy on the sauces, and their tempura maki is WAY too heavy for me. Their spicy rolls weren't even remotely spicy, and their specialty rolls are pretty boring, too.

Their straight up sushi and sashimi is outstanding, though. The uni is one of the best pieces of sushi I've ever had.

In short, if you stick to the basics, it's pretty damn good.

I'll put in a vote for Appare (86th and Douglas). We like it better than Taki or Wok in Motion. I've been meaning to try Miyabi but haven't made it there yet. Sounds like we have to try a little harder.

Is there some secret ingredient that Des Moines is missing that makes the sushi in other places so good?

FYI....Miyabi 9 is closed until March 15th. Was by there last night before a concert and there was a sign in the window. I guess "Mike" the owner and master sushi chef is on vacation.

Would be my #1 pick by far if open.
