State Gym access

A few friends and I are looking for a place to play some hoops indoors. None of us are students, but that never used to matter at the State Gym. I've asked a few current students but got mixed answers from all of them. Does anyone know if it's possible to get in without and ID or do you absolutely have to have and ISU ID? Other than this our options are pretty much nil.

Thanks!

Are you an alumni association member? All your friends would have to be, too, it seems like.

I did read this, just hoping they don't enforce it very well. For instance, a friend (who is a student) said he goes in a certain door and never has to present an ID. I'm really not looking to pay $50+ just for a day of basketball. I appreciate the responses though!

I think as long as someone can get in you can also purchase guest passes. You might wait a few weeks, they are doing intramural basketball right now, so my son has been going to Lied for pickup games and then intramurals in State.

My son went to Beyer over the summer and one of our starters was using all three courts to work out. He thought it was odd since they have Sukup, but he wasn't going to mess things up by trying to play there so he went to outside courts.

I think you can get a guest pass for $6 a day, weekly and monthly are also available. I think maybe you have to go with someone who has access otherwise, like student, faculty, etc. I think maybe you have to go through State to get in Beyer now but not sure.

Beyer and State Gym both have access-controlled entrances but they are also both connected by a sky walk. There is no "side/back door" to sneak into.

Does Beyer card now? They didn't when I was at ISU 5ish years ago.

I'm pretty sure Beyer doesn't card. Probably the lowest quality gym but it's by far the easiest to get into.

Don't you have to go through State to get into Beyer now?
That's how it seemed to work when they opened the remodeled State. Could be different now.

You can't just walk into Beyer anymore like you used to - that changed in 2011. You can either go into State and walk through the skywalk, or go in through Beyer which has the same card entry system as State. No more sneaking in though, unless there's a door that someone discovered and Rec Services missed.

What about the exit only doors facing Howe? Probably harder this time of year, but in the summer they were always open a few years ago.

All of the exits are alarmed, there aren't any doors you can even exit out of that aren't right at the entrance points.

Good luck getting in without a card. I suppose if you timed it perfectly and the people at the desk in Beyer weren't watching the monitor or able to see you could jump the turn stiles and get in. State Gym is basically impossible to get in without a card.

Forker is the only gym on campus without controlled access. But I am not sure if they have open gym in Forker. Lied, State and Beyer all require an ISU ID, or someone with access can sponsor you for $6 a person.

If you're going to play pickup ball at any of the rec centers you need to go to Lied. It's next to impossible to find a court at Beyer or State Gym due to the lack of courts. Also either get there right at six when they open up the Lied courts or go after 8:30 because they usually fill up for the 6-8 time slot.

Can't play at State/Beyer Sunday-Thursday from 6 to midnight due to intramurals. Can't play at Lied until 6 on school days due to the athletic teams get access to the courts (track).

You can't sneak in anymore, the state entrance has people plus monitors. Beyer you might get lucky but I wouldn't try it as there's only one person but also camera monitors.

Your best bet is Lied around 6-9 but it gets packed quickly so you better show up at 6. If you are there shooting by yourself you will likely get kicked off if it's very busy.

With intramurals going on, Lied is going to be pretty packed until prelims are done, which is another 2 weeks.

The lack of indoor courts in this town is a joke. City hall has open gym for about 2 hours everyday, but it's at like 1:00 in the afternoon. Really poor for a town of Ames' size.
