Now, after some late additions and to the roster - what are the thoughts about how the depth chart will shape up come Sept. 3rd vs. UNI?

That offensive line doesn't look too bad.

I'll make a bold prediction and say we won't redshirt Deshaunte Jones. Too good (athletic) to keep off the field.

We weren't too far off here. The only big difference was Tribune. I really wouldn't be surprised if he was a starter of 3rd string.

The D line I think will be hard to tell the depth chart because I see a lot of guys all getting snaps. DE and Leo is probably the most interesting because we don't have much for stand outs returning.

Players like DE/LEO Justin Thomas the newbie, newbie Brian C Bobek, and G Oge Udeogu should be guys that could make an impact against UNI, but will they new the scheme well enough to see playing time in that first game?

I am a big believer in letting the best and most athletic players get on the field, but you just have to dumb down the play book for them. Get them on the field and tell them that they only have to worry about this or that and play fast.

Both of those look pretty logical. I think two of the areas you differ are the most common with regard to returning players:

lb: Mills vs Seeley. My sense from watching last years games is that Mills gets to the ball better than Seeley. Seems like there has been positive Seeley comments so maybe he is showing something. Believe it when I see it I guess. Got to get off blocks or beat the block to attack downhill and he did neither.

cb: Wiltz vs Tribune. I think Wiltz was better than most people think so I'm in the minority. On the scale of 1-10 with Big 12 caliber being the scale, I prob saw him as a 5.5 (capable) vs most see him as 4.5 and some see him as a 2. I always felt tribune was overrated even during the preseason love fest. He didn't seem comfortable in the schemes and wasn't a very willing tackler. Wiltz was surprisingly much more physical and I think would even be a decent safety. I'm probably off base but I'm always way more negative about players than the consensus on here so it's nice for me to have something I can be contra-positive about.

not sure about punt returner because all three are important pieces.

Completely agree about Seeley and Mills.

Also, I agree about Tirbune being overrated and wiltz being the better of the two.

I just hope we find a good spot for Reggan Northrup because he is a %100 effort guy - ON THE FIELD. Not many players play as fast as him.

Did this on my phone so I'm sure I missed someone here

It's Justin Stewart not Thomas FYI...And my guess is this cat will start the minute he starts practice..just a hunch..

Payne will Start at CB all the way IMO. Nikel? Could actually see Tribune move there..

Last one..Safety- Everett Edwards. Think this kid will be good. Played behind a NFL safety for 2 years at Duke..kid has the physical tools and is clearly highly intelligent.

And since when is Glenn out? Or did I space this off..

I'd be very happy to see Payne and Peavy starting at corner. We have some pretty solid depth behind theme with Wiltz, Jones, and Tribune.

I don't see Seely starting. Thomas should be a lock at DE. I think Edwards will be in at Safety. We have some pretty good CB talent, and it'll be hard to keep Payne off the field.

I am pretty sure Payne will end up being the Nickel, unless Northrup can cover better than he has in the past.

If Northrup can hold down the nickel spot (admirably), then Payne and Peavy at CB could be one of the top duo's in the league IMO. It would no doubt put our best athletes out on the field for DB's.

Tribune is an amazing open field tackler. Other than that I think Rhoads put him on an island too often and too early and ruined his psyche.

I thought I remember them talking about Payne playing the nickel. He will start at whatever position he plays. I forgot about Edwards. He probably will end up starting. I also think the difference between starter and second string at DE won't be much. And thanks for correcting me on stewart. I think Tribune and wiltz will end up splitting time. I will say wiltz was featured with all the starters on the intro tease trailer so maybe that means something. I can be convinced of that pretty easily.

I don't want to deride guys like Harger and Chandler who are effort guys who have worked their way up the depth chart, but if our offense is going to be more explosive we need playmakers on the field. I hope we have another speed back to spell Warren. Maybe that kid is Ryen, with Harger a blocking back in certain formations. I am also hopeful that Fernandez can be our primary TE, with Chandler the short yardage blocker.

Bobek was a starter with the Gophers, so if healthy, I gotta believe he starts for ISU.

On defense, I hope a full year in the weight room has helped Jhaustin Thomas reach his potential. We could seriously use a player with his size and length playing at a high level. We need another d-lineman to make plays if teams double team Tucker.

I will be interested in how the DB's lineup in the 4-2-5 defense. As highly as the staff has spoken of Payne, he may be at nickel because he's our best cover guy and will blanket the opponents quick slot receiver all over the field. While the CB's will get safety help in the base defense.

The other guy the staff talked up during spring ball is Jarner Jones. If he has the speed to play CB, he should be able to play safety with his size..

Lazard did a great job as punt returner last year, but I am hopeful we can find someone else to field punts. Maybe that guy is Ryen, maybe a db or wr.

I think Waggoner has only played LDE, but I would like to see him on the right side as a starter. He reminds me a bit of Morrissey who played on the right side. Any word on if Mitchell Meyers will see action? I'd guess his stamina isn't what it once was, but he is a tough football player. Remember when he drilled Iowa's QB a coupleasure years ago after a whistle and the Iowa fans wentry nuts?

I wouldn't be surprised if Jones started at corner. He's not prototypical, but can play. Bobek could maybe play guard if they like Good-Jones more than the guard options.

I think Good-Jones could slide over to guard maybe too, that way we don't have a freshman playing center, making line calls.
