Today I came across this very cool beer can design:

I'm a bit uneasy to see Jack's tragic legacy on every single piece of merchandise out there, including the traditional "vice" of alcohol. I think the logo would benefit from some guardrails with a clear, tangible benefit that honors his story. IMO it should be a honor to earn - like the patch on the football uniforms. Not something to create revenue.

Because no one asked me, I will share some suggested steps:

1.) ISU licensing should create a THIRD royalty tier (the highest) for the Trice logo.

2.) All (most?) of that revenue should go towards scholarships and community programs that benefit those in need.

3.) Logo should only appear on certain merchandise categories. Sadly this means no DraftKings x Trice collab.

4.) Every merch item should be required to include packaging that shares his story and vision for a better future.

Anyone else agree?

With this year being 100 years, I think you're gonna see it everywhere and then some. Then it'll probably go back to very seldom usage.

#4 on your list is the most important to me. This story needs to be shared far and wide.

And it's not even a logo, really -- just what happened to be the pattern of "friction strips" they chose for the jersey.

I would argue its a secondary logo at this point.

Or the secondary logo after the I-State primary.

More than the "Bugle" and lame attempts to "modernize" the 90s bird in a blender.

That logo isn't an intellectual property of Jack Trice. It's simply the logo the school wore at the time he played.

The more it's used, the better, IMO. It keeps his story and legacy front of mind, and pays homage to a critical piece of ISU history.

It's a little more complicated than that, but I do think I agree with you. While it was nothing more than the pattern on the jersey, I don't think there's any doubt they are linking it back to Jack's legacy. This particular insignia gets lost in history if it weren't for the iconic Jack Trice picture. Even the Nike clothing that have the logo reference "Trice".

But with that said, I understand what you are saying. It wasn't Jack's design. It was just what he happened to be wearing. So to that end it's really the schools to do as they please. Is there something maybe a little campy about using the logo that's link to Jack and his story to sell beer? I suppose. But at the end of the day it's just a cool logo, and it's continued usage keeps his story alive.

I'm going to say I apply "bothsideism" to this.

I don't drink, not because I think I'm too good or anything - addiction runs in my biological father's side so I don't tempt it. But, because of that, I kinda cringe seeing something so pure and wholesome applied to alcohol.

On the other hand, it's a great brand identity (I have it as a tattoo) and love to see it get more visibility and usage.

The 5 bars were not a logo in 1923. They were the friction strip pattern.

And this is why the puking emoji is also a reaction.:nausea::puke:. That ******* monstrosity should be blended to oblivion and never seen again.
I like it. Maybe it's because it's the logo I grew up with, but I also recently purchased a t-shirt from ISU bookstore with that logo on it. May it never die!

I agree. Lots of ISU players whose names we don't know wore those uniforms. It makes a GREAt secondary logo that links to Trice and to Iowa State history and tradition. It should remain on our uniforms and be promoted as part of ISU's identity.

I agree with many of your ideas/posts. I think it is a good idea to be careful how this Trice emblem is used. For now, it's probably not something to worry about. I do like being made aware of some of the potential problems with its usage, peoples' views.

We'll see how it goes. Thanks for posting!

Yes, I like this one too. Seems like it emerged after we did away with tertiary blue as a school color, but it wasn't around very long before block I-State came around

That logo was originally a secondary during the "Blue Period." It was essentially the primary bird-in-a-blender logo with the "ISU" removed to only leave Cy fisting his way out of a tornado.

When the I-State become the primary, this logo was recolored to remove the blue and set to be the "main" secondary logo. I really wish they would have kept this one as the main secondary.

I wonder what that would look like if you took out the darker shade of cardinal and made it black instead of darker red. I would imagine something like that would be a Campbell favorite.

Instead, we ended up with Sex Offender Cy, who nobody seems to like.

Or worse.

I get it, but the bike jersey is cool!! I know they were trying to work with the AD on this but George kept getting passed down the line. I was able to get one after RAGBRAI. It was well worth the $75 donation to the foundation. IMG_3442.jpeg
