Why are the local schools all closed tomorrow. Is it gonna get that nasty? I'm supposed to go to Pipestone Minn in AM.

I think just because of the below zero temperatures and wind chills. I don't believe its supposed to get above zero. I can't believe how little it takes to close school these days. Just dress your kids warmer!

Not going to be nasty. Just cold (at least that is my understanding). They cancel school due to cold on occassion. They don't want kids standing at bus stops in -40 windchills.

They didn't cancel school when I was a kid unless it reached 56 below. We are raising a generation of pansies!

Due to the extreme cold wind chill the weather people are predicting. Back in our day I don't remember having school canceled based on what the weather man said.

I know ,I walked to school three miles in fifty below all the time. My mom just packed Jack Daniels in my thermos to make it bearable.

I only had school cancelled for cold weather once. Wind chills were around -40 that day or two. It's supposed to get around there again tonight/tomorrow morning.

I had to walk five miles in 60 below, all the while pushing the dead carcases of my schoolmates to the side of the road so their blood wouldn't corrode the tracks of the red army tanks driving by. But I was rewarded for my efforts with an unused sheet of wide rule notebook paper, which i used to carve the flesh off of my fallen comrades to feed the wolves that chased me all the way back home. Oh, those were the days my friend.

Keep in mind they changed the wind chill formula back in 2001, so that it might not sound as bad today. Tomorrows temps would probably be closer to 50 or 60 below with the old formula.

The NWS re-did the calculation of wind chill in 2001. Under the old chart wind chills tonight in Des Moines would be between -51 and -58.

So on the contrary, we were pansies back then!

here's a link if you want to check it out.

One of the biggest concerns is having the kids standing out at the bus stops and having the diesel gelling up becasue of the cold. Good possibility a bus full of kids could get stranded for quite some time in this weather if the bus breaks down.

The consolidation of rural districts means that kids need to be on the road for much, much greater distances than they used to be. Accidents happen and kids die - no one wants that blood on their hands.

Supposed to be -45 with the wind tomorrow, I'm hoping my school closes.

Edit: As I was writing the post, got a 2 hour delay!
