Scary thought regarding the Patriots

While they don't have a first round pick, they do own San Fran's first rounder in the '08 draft. That pick looks to be the 2nd overall pick...as things sit today.

It is quite possible that pick could be none other than Darren McFadden.

Consider the possibilities of putting that kind of running back on that already very potent offense.

I think it's more likely that they'll trade out of that pick, but the thought of it should make the rest of the league a bit queasy.

My guess is they pick up something on the defense...say a LB.

Their LB corps is not the youngest around.

I doubt the Patriots would keep that #2 pick. It just doesn't seem their style to spend that much big money on a rookie. I think they'll trade down, like they always do and get a later 1st round pick and a few later round picks. Maybe they could get Meyer to be the backup for Brady. No one better to learn from.

Right, I agree.

But what if they decide to trade a couple of these guys? I would think they could get 2nd to 4th rounders for the better of the 2 or 3. Those round are where the Pats have done most of their damage over the years.

I almost guarantee that they trade out of that. It makes NO sense for them to spend that kind of money on an unproven guy when they can find 3 or 4 known-quantity guys who fit their system better and cost the same as that one guy.

Just look at the Reggie Bush situation. Everyone thought that Houston was insane to pass on him, and it was largely thought that was one of the draft picks in the history of the NFL. Well Mario Williams is looking like an absolute stud. Reggie Bush has been marginally more productive than the average running back in the NFL, and Vince Young looks like he's got a lot to learn.

It just doesn't seem like NE's style to play riverboat gambler with the #2 pick. Let someone who needs to sell tickets go up there and pick up the big name rookie, while they go out and grab a few guys who will help them win superbowls.
