Is UNC the #1 job in mens basketball?

An objective thing but you'd have to think it's top 3 if it's not a clear #1. Just the fact that Roy left KU for the job shows you it's kind of an elite job among elite jobs.

I wouldn't use that as why the UNC job elite. Williams was a longtime UNC assistant before he left to coach at KU (remember, Williams went from UN assistant to KU Head Coach. KU was his first head coaching job). I think UNC to Williams was one of those dream jobs for him that he was always going to go to if the opportunity came.

Not saying that UNC is not elite, because they are. But I wouldn't put them above KU. UNC and KU are on the same level in my opinion.

My favorite memory was Iowa State/KU in 2000. KU comes into Hilton as the favorite and the talking heads keep saying that KU is going to run the not-so-deep ISU squad out of the gym. During the second half it is clear that the Eustachy not-here-on-a-effing-track-scholarship team is running the Jayhawks out of the gym. There is a shot of Roy squatting down in front of the KU bench and he is visibly shaking.

Memory - he was throwing dice at Riverside one night when we had a work function there. I can't remember the year (would have been November 2006 or 2007, maybe 2008), so not sure if he was recruiting Barnes or someone else. He was with some guy who was a former player, or asst coach, something - he was semi famous too but can't recall the name. Just playing craps and trying to blend in. Wearing a chincy KU windbreaker...

I will not miss him. Hated how he pretended to be a choir boy but was dirty af paying players etc. Blech.

Maybe UNC will hire Scott Drew and Baylor can go back to the toilet with Tech...

Edit: someone mentioned Self, that would be really interesting. Would KU take a step back? Their AD is a doorknob, maybe he will whiff on the hire. But I am sure the shoe money would keep good players coming in.
Not sure that Kansas has an AD right now, the guy that was there resigned over the football coaches deal at LSU, so a new person will have to hired before the FB coach is hired.

What are your favorite memories of Roy?

Mine was sitting three rows behind him in our student section. 5 of his bench players walked on the court during a live ball (10 Jhawks on the court) when the ball was on the other end and flipped off our student section. Roy laughed it up with them, like a deep belly laugh.

It's what I instantly thought of when Melvin's "finger" was considered some major thing and how serious Ejim and Fred handled it, for Roy that type of thing was just daily operating procedure.

Serving him and the Kansas team at the Gateway Hotel before a game almost 20 some years ago. Had to make sure there was a bowl of lemons on his table.

As much as Roy cries/gets choked up they are probably going to need like 3 towels for him today at the press conference I suspect.

Hall of fame coach no doubt.

But to me he really underperformed in so many years at North Carolina. (yes he did get a national title there about 16 years ago)

But when you have Michael Jordan shaking hands with recruits, being in the top ten every year should almost be more manageable.

I loved that team. I hope we can get the same type of strength players like that going forward.

It was 2001 or 2002 and Roy didn't allow fans to come in early. Which was mainly a bunch of students. Once we got in I almost died because the human (body to body) through the door to the student seating. Cause of potential death: trampled by humans. Needless to say Roy got an earful from the student section that day and I will never forget the anger.

Reminds me of my favorite Roy quote, " You can't out-coach Larry Eustachy" :D

He has 3 National Championships At UNC. More recent than anyone in the Big12

Which coaches have 3 since Roy has been at Carolina? So not sure underperforming is the right term.

Between this and the time that he took the L to us very graciously in the NCAA tournament a few years ago (refs were disputing how much time left after Kane's made shot), my respect for him grew a bit.
I was going to bring this up. I gained a lot of respect for how he handled that. Had every right to cause a scene with how it played out but was very classy and immediately shook Fred’s hand
