Looking for a recommendation, and at least a good link for an organization who can give one. I've had a couple of bad experiences with breeders (two separate dogs with seizure issues), so I really want to check this out thoroughly before we get another pup.

We're looking for a smaller dog (under 15 lbs). Doesn't necessarily have to be pure bred. Any help would be greatly appreciated (curious if the veterinarians on the board have any). Private message if you want to keep it off the main board. Thanks

You are going to get hammered for "why not go to a rescue shelter?"

(From a guy that did that went to a shelter)

You can get puppies at ARL of Des Moines. We foster mom's that just gave birth and the puppies stay with us until they weigh enough to be adopted and don't need their mom anymore. Also most fosters a introduced to cats so if you have a cat the dog usually doesn't care. Good luck.

I don't mind a shelter dog either, but we want a puppy for sure as we have another dog and want to train from square one without established personalities getting in the way . If we can find a pup at a shelter , great.

If you have a breed in mind, it might be worth looking into people who breed show dogs...or any breeder that doesn't just breed them as a commodity.

I say that because with our dog, we were kind of in a similar spot as you in that we wanted a puppy to start fresh. Being our first dog, we weren't sure that we were good enough at this whole thing to possibly bring home some bad things we weren't equipped to handle (and I know, that's not the case with all shelter pets, we were just paranoid). We wanted a foxhound, and found a breeder who hunts them competitively. So he doesn't breed dogs with issues, since he doesn't just breed to sell, if he breeds issues, he has to deal with them. However, he is willing to sell from the litters he has, but it's not why he breeds. Now, with you looking for <15 lbs, obviously the hunting breeders are out, but if you can get ahold of some breed specific breeders who are breeding for a purpose (show), and not just as a commodity in themselves, I think you could up your chances of getting a dog from healthy stock.

Honestly, with the sheer number of unwanted animals out there...in general stay away from breeders whose sole interest is selling them. We throw away too many animals to just be breeding them to sell. But, if you find a breeder that does it for another reason (show/hunting, etc.), they may have a pup that's not perfect looking and thus not good for the show circuit, but otherwise perfectly healthy, and you're giving them a good home.

*edit: Or adrock's statement above.

That's good to know. I check out ARL first but didn't see puppies listed. We'll have to call up there (when my wife is ready).

I'd suggest first finding a trustworthy and reputable breeder, no matter what the breed, and then reaching out to them for advice on where you can go to get the small breed you're after. Good breeders despise the puppy mills and crappy "breeders" more than anybody. They will definitely steer you straight if they have relevant info.

I went to Penara Labs for our dog, she's a veterinarian and a breeder. Top quality. Since she's a vet she might have the lowdown on quality breeders of the types you might be looking for.

I would second this. I got an 8 week old puppy from here recently, and her whole litter went through this shelter. There was also another full litter that came through, though I'm not sure how often that happens, so you may have to be patient. They use foster families to hold onto the puppies while they find them homes, so they're kept in good conditions throughout the process. Only $195 for the adoption, including spay/neuter, first round of vacs, and microchip. You can also just search for puppies on petfinder.com.

HIGHLY recommend this. They ALWAYS have pups because shelters will not keep pregnant mommies. This is a tremendous organization that pulls dogs from shelters that are about to be euthanized (amongst other things). When shelters receive a pregnant mom or a mom with new pups, they contact her immediately because they do not want the expense and hassle of pups. I think I saw this weekend that they received a mom dog and her pups from a shelter in MO that were about to be euthanized. If they do not have a pup that falls into a category that you are looking for, just contact them and let them know what you are interested in for a possible future adoption. Dogs cost $195 and come completely vetted and fixed.....you would spend more doing all of that at your own expense.
