If this is truly the hire I am disappointed we did not hold a broader search for the job. TJ was assistant under GMac, Fred, and Prohm and hasn't exactly had that great of a run at UNLV so seems like we are just dipping back into the familiar with the hire if it is TJ instead of changing the direction of the program with someone more proven and doesn't already have ties to ISU. To literally turn around 24 hours after letting Prohm go and this is the hire you make, I sure hope this story proves to be wrong and premature rumors. Would be one of the few times I have been disappointed with Pollard if this was the hire he had in mind all along.

I agree, looks like it's based on their friendship rather than his coaching abilities. Hope I'm wrong....

All I can say is that I was pretty certain Prohm wasn’t the right man for the job about half way through year one, but I at least gave the man time to do his thing. Hell, I didn’t miss a home game his first two years. Those in here talking in negative absolutes are jumping the gun. People told me I’m not a real fan for not supporting Prohm last year and early this year because they couldn’t see what was obvious for a while, but at least I gave the guy a shot.

TJ was part of the best run we’ve had as a program, wife was a cyclone great, and as far as I’m concerned we owe him a shot before making judgements.

Just because Rhoads wanted to be here and failed doesn’t mean all coaching candidates in that same vein are doomed from the start.

It’s unfair to hire people you know and trust. Unfair to who?

The way of the world is patently unfair. If only you could live in the fantasy world of this message board where every one of us is the greatest basketball mind in the history of the universe.

I highly doubt you've actually hired anyone in your life using real, fair practices. It's unfair to other people who are trying to get the same job, and not giving them the time of the day just because your friend wants the job, you worked with him a few years ago, and you trust him even though he hasn't performed well lately.

Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions but again, if true then JP is very bad with optics.

JP is putting himself on the line here. If TJ fails their fates might be linked. CMC has obviously been incredible and JP’s vision for Iowa State has been amazing, but hiring a buddy without much of a process and having him fail would be a bridge too far for me. That would mean he’d hired 1 basketball coach who succeeded and 3 that failed, with 1 being a nepotism-type hire. How many ADs are hiring their 5th basketball coach in their tenure? For all of our sakes I hope TJ succeeds.

Lol. JP will be here as long as he wants to be here.

If true, disappointing I was hoping for new blood that were great recruiters! We’ll probably be doing this again in the near future unfortunately!

I have no problem with hiring TJ if you at least kick the tires on a few other guys first. But it appears he went straight to his buddy before the ink dried on Prohms termination.

I know we all gave Leath a hard time for interjecting in the Prohm search. But this may be why another voice in the room is needed.

Hoping it’s either not true or we can look back 2 years from now and laugh at us doubting him.

I hope TJ succeeds beyond our wildest dreams, I’ll be cheering him on - but it doesn’t help him in any way to have the aura of a corrupt process for hiring him hanging over his head before he even starts. He has to succeed or JP is going to really regret this process.

But you are assuming this search didn't start until Prohm was let go. It was pretty obvious a change was needed back in January. I'd expect that Pollard was conducting the search over the past few months. He's really good at keeping that under the radar.
