I don't know if it's the state of Iowa, or pedantic engineering minded ISU students, but I don't have these types of conversations nearly as much as I used to when I lived in the state.

A few months late to the argument but….

Vegetable is a culinary term, not a biological term.

Fruit is both a culinary and biological term. The biological term basically just means something with seeds and includes tomatoes, pumpkins, cucumbers, and all sorts of other “vegetables.”

The traditional “fruit” from a culinary perspective is what we mean by the fleshy sweet plant bulbs.
