Now that I've had a little while to think it over, here are my thoughts. First, I think now is a great time to look at the nature of our program in general. I was on this board when Harrison Barnes committed to UNC and the general feeling was that of despair. At the time, we felt having a kid grow up into a 5 star recruit in our own backyard was our only shot at bringing in that level of recruit. At the time, we were having to battle mid-majors to pull 3 star talent, let alone 4 star talent. When Harrison left, that was it. We had for years put all of our eggs in the Barnes is the savior basket, and we were screwed.
It just doesn't feel that way now. We will get more 5 stars on campus. Even without 5 stars, we will bring in enough talent to compete for a Big 12 title. It's such a great state of our program to be able to move on from this and know Fred will bring in talent to replace the loss of Vaughn.
Also, for those of us who are baffled by his commitment to UNLV, it really isn't that hard to understand. I admit, I was one who wanted to claim something illegal happened. But when you think about it, the kid has one year to play college basketball. He's been told his whole life how great he was, so he isn't concerned about coaching or how playing in the MWC will affect his future. I'm sure he's got a little Ivan Chiriaev "the NBA needs Ivan Chiriaev" in him. Why not live in Vegas, run a program with three of your fellow recruits, play on a team without much coaching, and start cashing checks after the season is over? If we take off our cyclone colored glasses, and look at things in the mind of a 17 year old and not a middle aged white man, the decision is not all that confusing.
