Re: Rashad Vaughn

As an Iowa State fan I wouldn't be bringing up other schools' 1st rounders who didn't pan out. ISU doesn't exactly have a stellar track record in that regard in the last dozen years.

Still think UNLV is the most likely non-ISU destination. Less competition at the wing than KU or UNC, local team, mentor at Findlay, etc. Plus I bet he's getting an earful about UNLV about every day. And probable ISU bashing, unless we're ignored.

The flip side is maybe he just likes having the local team on his list. Did while in Minnesota, then added UNLV when he went there. So who knows.

The guy who started and finances Findlay prep is also UNLV's #1 booster.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

If he goes to a different school it definitely wouldn't be heartbreaking, not one bit. This is about what my reaction would be: "oh well, let's get the next one".

That's kinda where I'm at too. Don't get me wrong, I'd love nothing more than to get Vaughn. But he's not bigger than Iowa State University. Sorry. He just isn't. Fred was the first one on him. He's done everything he can legally do to get him to come here. If he still doesn't want to, so be it.

In fact, knowing that Vaughn will likely be a one and done kid, would we actually be better off in the long run if we got a really good 4 year kid like Ejim has been, or Niang will likely be, versus having a Vaughn for one year? Tough to say. It would depend on how far Vaughn could take us in that one year I guess? If he takes us to the Final Four, then having him for only one year was well worth it.

Being a 1 and done means nothing. If he is a true 1 and done, ISU will be in a great place. If not, we might get more years out of him.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

Know I'll regret saying this but why would he want to go play at KU along side his present Findlay teammate, Oubre? Oubre is their leading scorer and it seems like RV wouldn't want to share the show with him. But the problem is they will certainly be loaded for a NC run.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

I wont be as disappointed if Vaughn comes here as I would of been in the past. We are going to be absolutely loaded the next 2-3 years regardless if Vaughn comes or not and Hoiberg has shown that we are going to be an NCAA tourney team probably every year (with an exception of years here and there). I hope we get Vaughn, because this lineup:

Morris
Thomas
Vaughn
Hogue
Niang

That would be crazy and would probably contend for a final 4 run.

Don't forget a bench of:

Custer,
SDW,
Naz,
Nader,
Mckay

Those five alone might be able to compete with the lower half of our conference next year.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

If he does choose ISU, I like the idea of the media watching very closely since UK, KU and UNC's name will be in the discussion. Would be a ton of press for the clones on signing day.

I prefer look it more as how much better this program is due to White, Clyburn, Kane, and Lucious playing for one year rather than random player who needs develops for 4 years to contribute (ala Iowa). RV is one of the few players that could come in and start from day one. It would also raise the programs recruiting profile and potential of next years team, thus the reward is worth it IMO. ISU can pickup a four year guy the year after he goes pro to replace his scholly in '15 or '16. I don't really see a down side.

We don't want to be like Kentucky or Kansas this year (I think they will get it together) but having a few one and done player is good. While we haven't had any out of high school yet we have had a few as transfers and that has worked out well. If we balance the one and done players with older experienced players like we have before I think we will be successful.

If he picks another school, can we start a new thread?

Re: Rashad Vaughn

I've been told that there's a good chance, if Custer meets expectations, that he could potentially start over Morris next year because Morris makes a better sixth man because of energy (see McGee) and Custer's basketball IQ is through the roof. I've heard him be compared to Hornacek.

Holy **** if Custer is that good... I truly believe Morris can be one of the best PG's in the country.

Awesome. However I really have a feeling Monte could be the best point guard to ever play in an ISU uniform before it is all said and done......
