This reminds me of my father's attitude - if it came by itself, it will go away by itself.

Yeah, and for those 2-3 months we were all repeatedly telling her to go - all 3 of her kids, 2 in law kids, grandkids, her husband and her dentist. She probably wouldn't have gone to the dentist either but he is her son.

We still have some no year funding that will sustain us for a week or so more. It'll get pretty dicey after that. They have us basically digging in the couch cushions looking for obligations to reduce and spending to curtail to try to buy us a little more time.


Honestly, right now I do feel more important, or at least more valuable to the country than the president or speaker. I also feel each and every one of you is more important to the country than them. This can be moved to the cave if necessary but it is a multi-party insult.

I'll send some pies if you have a bake sale.

I tried to point out to my wife that there may be some good come out of this. Many voters who "took a chance" during the last presidential election will have plenty of reasons to come to their senses. Hopefully a certain party will too so it won't even have to come down to the general election.

I'm probably going too far so I will shut up.

Sent out a January newsletter at work yesterday and got a whole slew of "automatic replies." I always look at these, because occasionally they'll say something like "John Smith has retired from XYZ. Please send future messages to so-and-so."
This time was different with four messages in a row from FSA-USDA employees. Although the format differed from message to message, the content was the same.

Also, heard from a colleague who was on a conference call for a professional association yesterday that at USDA only the director is working.

I've also notices at the top of a couple of our financial institution like this: "If you are a federal government employee and currently on furlough due to the government shutdown, please ask one of our team members how we can help."

Much like what happened last time. I'm betting the NSRIC & NLAE buildings are locked out. Well, maybe not NSRIC - I think they moved a bunch of non-feds in there a few years back.

No, that's NLAE. However, you probably had classes in NSRIC which is directly to the west of NLAE. There are many non-Fed people in NSRIC including Value-added ag extension and the Egg Industry Center.

I've heard one bank is offering 6 months of interest free financing on loans for federal employees. It's probably Wells Fargo so we'd be hit with a ton of fees for the accounts we didn't know we had.

People drive through red lights all the time here, you can't expect them to wait their turn at a 4 way stop.

To clarify, the person to the right goes first if you both arrive at the same time. Otherwise its first there, first to go.

The real screw-ups occur when there are multiple cars at each point.

If I see that it's going to be a tie, I purposely take my time stopping so I stop second, and the other person still wants me to go first.

I do that, too. Unless it's VERY obvious I'm stopping second, the other car still waits. Until we both start to move forward. Ugh.

Friday rant: Despite having crosswalks every block, I still have to dodge jaywalkers wearing dark clothing, staring at their phone, walking diagonally across the street all while having their back to oncoming traffic every stupid morning when I drop my wife off downtown.

I get crossing in the middle of the street when there's no traffic, but some of these people are grossly overestimating their survival rate against three thousand pounds of metal.
