on the wood topic......my parents are thinking about doing some minor logging in our timber that's probably overdue and been batted around for 10 years. They have some cherry and walnut trees (maybe one each, I don't remember) in there that my mom is thinking about splitting among us kids to have stuff made out of from 'farm wood'. Which I think is really cool. But I think they'd just give us the wood and then we go get it made into stuff. My mom is like it'd be a decent amount cause they are bigger trees or something so you could get cabinets done. Well......I already have those plus that seems not......heirloomy? Like, what happens if we move or want to redo the kitchen or something. I was thinking like bedroom furniture, dining hutch, stuff like that. But IDK how that even works. Nothing set in stone yet but the painting wood topic made me think of it.

My Dad did a bunch of that after retirement....he had a lot of oak, ash, and walnut that he had acquired and started making stuff out of them for his kids and grandkids. He made some really cool clocks, these awesome banks that only opened if you knew the trick, and so on.

He also made some grandfather clocks, which is the kind of heirloom gift I think everyone loves. :)

If there is cherry and walnut there, I'd highly recommend having it cut up and dried, if that's what your Mom wants to do. That way you have rough material for whatever you end up making.

So we currently have a black lab that is around 7 or 8. We're thinking of maybe getting a 2nd dog so she won't be alone all day while we're at work. Obviously if we did this we would have her meet the other dog first to make sure they get along. Has anyone got a 2nd dog after having the first for a few years? How did it go?

Yeah, but I think his depth perception is the issue. He seems to be able to see stuff, but I know the parents have made statements about him not being about to see distances well. Those vision tests are only a short distance and the side lights are fairly easy. I know the test lady and I could sweet talk her if I needed to. The mom works there also, so I think this kid will be turned loose. I don't see him failing the vision test and in small towns, I doubt the drivers ed teacher will force him to drive.

I'm pretty sure it's mandated by the state that you get so many driving hours in.

The 1st dog lives a lot longer, anytime we've paired up dogs the old one seems to pep up.

Not exactly sure.

I know, but that is why I said I doubt they would make him drive for the test. If the drivers ed teacher thinks they are questionable they can make them drive for DOT.

That sounds like a really awesome idea. I wish I had a family farm with some nice old trees to mill down.

My dad always worked with wood. In his retirement he would just buy the raw slabs, plane them and build stuff, a bed frame, a spiral staircase, built in hutches among other things.

It can be nice as they obviously entertain each other. Our yard took a beating as they would run and play but it is also not great to begin with as it is one big hill so it easily get's torn up and is hard to grow grass on to begin with. Walks...we entertained the neighborhood. I do suggest getting a two dog harness to avoid the tangled leash situation.

Other things to keep in mind. Cost-you are doubling everything, food, vet, treats etc. Poop again is doubled..with bigger dogs this can become a problem depending on how often you pick it up.

We had the first dog for three years before getting a second. He was an amazing dog that both tolerated and liked the pup. Sadly he suddenly passed away about 20 months after we got the second dog. It was nice to still have another dog at that time.
