All of the tree loss in NE Iowa is maybe the equal or worse than Dutch Elm disease. Remember going off to ISU as a freshman, August 1969, and coming home for Thanksgiving and being in shock as I drove the mile from downtown to my parents house. The solid canopy of elms was gone and all that was left was utility poles and lines which I'd never noticed before. You used to drive down Franklin under a solid cathedral arch of elms. I was worse than at ISU where I had visited the summer of '69 and when I got there for school in the fall all of the elms were gone. The LA Building and Dairy looked naked although the four huge elms in the Dairy courtyard were still alive (but not for long). People born after the 1970's have no idea how much city landscapes have changed. There are a couple of streets in the Twin Cities that still have elms, it's like some sort of throwback visually to scenes I grew up with.
Speaking of elms, **** dead elm trees!
