... I don’t think he was effective the first three years though. I still think we underachieved his first two years. As historically good as they were I think they should have been better...

Underachieved? I mean I love Fred and all, but what did Fred achieve with all those guys now playing professionally? Maybe, just maybe Sweet 16s were the max for that group of players. No shame in that!

Fred left us with some great players, and NO bench, and no future. That is part of his legacy too.

Niang, Morris, Naz, Burton and Nader I think all owe Prohm a ton for installing some basic defensive skills that have helped them all get time in the Association. I am not sure if that happens for all of them under Fred's defense optional coaching.

I will have to review the games this week and I think the last two were really good offensively. I don’t think he was effective the first three years though. I still think we underachieved his first two years. As historically good as they were I think they should have been better.

I think to an extent he has struggled with gifted offensive players and relied to much on go make a play. Some of it is also the comparison to Freds out of bounds plays.

I totally want him to succeed and I’m finally starting to fully buy in after this week but Fred put us on a level where we should expect the tournament every year with an occasional miss. Yeah he didn’t leave a balanced class roster but some people are still to critical of where we are as a program IMO.

Most of the issues in those first two years were getting the kids to buy in and believe in the guy who only had four years of head coaching experience at a mid-major and half of one season of Division III experience as a player. Not an easy thing to do when following a guy like Hoiberg.

He runs most of the same sets as Hoiberg did. The only difference is that he's a better coach defensively and was left in a pickle recruitingwise. The ceiling is higher with Prohm IMO.

Sorry, but that was a three game clinic on how to play offense. A little sloppy for a few minutes vs UA and a few bad threes by THT and Shayok today, but otherwise almost flawless in getting good looks.

Compare the shot charts...

SDSU was all over the place.

We had a few mid-range jumpers in the flat, which are not the worst shots in the world, but 90%+ of our shots were threes or point blank range. Terrific!

Point blank being something that often goes in, draws a foul, or gives a chance for an offensive board. I know that THT and Shayok uncorked a few times without looking for a good shot first, but they are at least shooting from good spots on the court.

This team is not flawless, but that is the shot chart of a disciplined offense.

Did SDSU grab one of our game plans from a year ago?

People WAY overestimate the impact of a coach beyond his tenure. Second year after Dean Freaking Smith left UNC was mediocre. Four years removed and they were 8-20!

No team coaches itself. let's not forget that while ISUs team of guys that had to claw to get some NBA minutes after a couple of years were winning tourney games, a generational talent in Ben Simmons was not even sniffing a tournament appearance. No, Prohms first two teams did not underachieve. Was more possible? Sure. Was a lot worse possible? Absolutely.
You can really judge a coach's offensive ability based on the shots that become available. Great shots were available for as much as you can possibly hope for in all three games. For people that appreciate good team basketball, ISUs offense was a thing of beauty.

Prohm has this team rebounding and playing defense. Impressive tournament for the Cyclones. SWIRL ON!

Yup, there will be many a game when shots aren't falling but the D will keep the team in the game. At the same time, there's so much offensive talent on the team, someone will be able to score even when others aren't hitting their shots, such as with THT today. Getting players to buy in with effort/determination is the most important aspect of coaching. Heard nothing but praise about Prohm (and the team) from the Maui announcers. Great pub for the program.

Maybe for his next career he can be an electrician, or maybe a mortician, or a technician? Oh, the possibilities.
as long as it is not a politician. We will leave that to the Nebraskans, ala Tom Osborne

Wut? Can someone translate?

You seem to be critical of where Prohm has the program but believe some people are too critical of where we are as a program?

You seem to want the program at a level where we can expect to be in the tourney each year with an occasional miss - yet we are in the tourney every year with one miss?

Does your head hurt?
