NFL: Pro Football Overtime....?

When will the NFL wise up and change their OT time rules....? (imo) They need to adapt the more exciting College OT senarios. If you win the toss in the NFL about 75% time you win the game....:skeptical:

Agreed... NFL OT is usually a snooze.

Receive.... couple dink and dunk passes.... run the ball to the middle of the field.... 35 yard FG... game over.

I hate NFL overtime with a passion. College overtime is about as perfect of a setup as can be. :yes:

Actually the team that has won the toss has won a little over half. I really don't have a problem with it personally, but there may be ways to make it better. The college OT favors teams that are good in the red zone or have good FG kickers, and the fact that there is no clock also comes into play.

Only if the defense of the team that loses the toss doesn't do its job.

FWIW, I'm torn on the issue. I used to be 100% against the sudden death rule. More recently I've come to see both sides of the issue.

I don't think it will happen because the NFL is very sensitive to how long a game lasts.

In theory a game can last quite some time under the college rules.

I don't like the sudden death aspect (well, as a Steelers fan I was loving it last night, but it's not fair)

But I could do without starting at the 25. They're pros. The best and they should be able to work a full field.

IMO - you give the flip loser at least one possession. If they can't get it done, then it's sudden death. Takes the coin flip out of it a bit.

So in last nights game. Steelers get the FG. But they have to kick it off to Tenn who gets one more possession. If Pitt hadn't scored, punted and Tenn scored - game over. If Pitt punted, Tenn then punted, the Pitt scored - game over. Namely - at least one shot in OT, but not necessarily equal.

I could see the equal thing. But the D's are so good, the kickers so good, you could be OT'ing forever.

Pretty much on board with all comments so far. I just wish each team had a chance in the pros. Think how the game last night would have been different if Pit got the ball first and knew that they would want to score a TD instead of a field goal if they knew Ten would be getting a shot next??!
They may have forced a pick, a fumble, who knows, but I think it would change the game big time.

Two changes the NFL needs to adapt from College FB:

Overtime
Pass Interference

I love the college "spot foul or 15 yards" rule. Throwing the ball up in the hopes of getting a pass interference call 40 yards downfield is total BS.

432 OT games (regular season) in NFL history, through 2008.

Winning team won coin toss - 54%
Winning team lost coin toss - 46%

Times both teams had at least one possession - 70%
Times which the toss winner scored on first possession - 30%

Of the 130 times that the coin toss winner scored on their first try, 95 of those were with a FG.

Games won by FG - 70%
Games won by TD - 26%

Oh, and it's about time the NCAA explored making OT start at the 35 instead of the 25. At least force a team to get some yardage, if not a first down, before being able to settle for a field goal.

I like this.

In general it is a tricky decision. I would be ok with both teams getting a possession, or how about you have to score a TD in OT? That would get rid of a lot of first possession wins.
