On our budget, we'll be living in the "haven't had a really good steak" category for a long, long time.

Sounds delicious, but there's no way that we can pay for that place in the next few years.

I don't have a lot of vices, such as cigarettes, drinking, etc so I will treat myself and the wifey with a couple of $150 dinning experiences each year.

I used to work in an industry where it was fairly common for me to take clients or potential clients to such places on the company dime, so that was a REALLY nice benefit as you can imagine...

No vices here. Just grad school and a baby on the way.

To me, paying for high end steak is kind of a waste. You can go to a butcher or even a whole foods and get some fantastic steaks for $20-25 a piece (or less). Take them home, cook them how you want them.

If you don't have much experience grilling steaks, start with cheaper ones and practice. Once you know what you are doing and exactly how you want them, go buy the nice ones and enjoy.

Wife had a good recipe where you cook it a 500° for like an hour, keep it in the oven, don't open the door for like 5 hours, then turn it back on for a half hour. Then let rest before serving. Season with salt n pepper and get it to room temp. before cooking. We usually have a whole rib, but size usually doesn't matter... With prime rib at least.

No, I believe that is the Embassy Club (member only place). 801 Grand S&C is on groundish level.

Actually, the top two floors of 801 Grand used to be the Embassy Club until a couple years ago when they consolidated their operations and now operate out of one of the top floors of the Ruan Building. There is a law firm that is on those top floors now.

801 Streak & Chop is one level below skywalk level. It is hands down the best prime rib (and other cuts of steak ) you'll find in Des Moines PERIOD and yes....you'll pay for it. They use only USDA Prime Beef (not sure if any other restaurant does) which is the best of the best. All sides are al e cart, but they come family style, so each will serve more than one person.

Great place for special occasions both for the food and the atmosphere. Also great place for people watching during caucus season. Cool (but small) bar atmosphere too for just stopping in for a drink (although again...pricey).

Agree that Chicago Speakeasy has very good prime. I know there are others that are good as well, but if you want "the best", it is 801.

Poorer side of town? Wow... Apparently you rate restaurants by how much a person earns in an area, great way of looking at it... That place has been an Iowa tradition for years. There's plenty of poorer sides of town than off of 14th... Jethro's is in one of them and I doubt you'd complain about that.

*off soap box*

That being said, Big Steer is THE place in Des Moines to get prime rib. I've had it plenty of other places, they never have bad prime rib there. Ever.

I've had the prime rib at the Big Steer as well and it is one of the better in town. As far as having to go to a top dollar steakhouse to have good prime rib that is bull. Its all about how they prepare it and the quality of the meat not just how much you have to pay for it. Dexfield Diner I believe gets theirs from the Redfield locker right across the street and that is locally raised beef. The bigger portion served with baked potato and salad runs about $18 and it's better than most $30+ prime rib you'll pay for in Des Moines.

We get our beef from my wife's family that sends their own steers to the locker and with a little seasoning and the right grilling is better steaks and meats you'll pay top dollars for in town. It's all about knowing how to buy the right cuts and knowing how to prepare them. Fareway usually sells good stuff and the Amana cuts at Hy-Vee are very tasty too if you know how to pick out the better steaks in the case. The meats Rube's sell are top quality too but you'll pay top dollar buying from them too.

Cooking prime rib (the cut the OP inquired about) isn't like throwing a steak on the grill.

If you ever find yourself in the Sioux City area, head up to Archie's Waeside in LeMars. You'll get a steak that's every bit as good as 801, Ruth's Chris, etc. and your total bill will be about 1/2 of those prime steakhouses.

Until you have a steak at a place that costs $30+ for an ala carte steak, you haven't had a really good steak, IMO. There is a difference between a meal at 801 (or other places like it) and lower or mid range steak houses, even though you feel some pain when they hand you the check.

I completely disagree with this notion. I've had both Mortons and Stetsons in Chicago, and was disappointed both times. Both were inferior to the steaks I grill myself in the backyard. I'm not even talking tastiness per dollar here, I'm saying straight up, my steak is better than theirs.

If you want a great steak go to David Burke's or Gene and Georgettis.

Best Prime Ribs I have had...

1. Tournament Club of Iowa's smoked prime rib (The Saturday night prime rib, not Sunday Brunch, because it's actually the same one

2. Johnny's Italian Steakhouse's Spicy prime rib

3. Chicago Speakeasy

4. Skip's/Nick's - It's really the same place, but I like the atmosphere at Skip's a little better

5. Prime Time in Guthrie Center - especially if you like it in bulk

6. Check out specials, alot of local places will have a prime rib special and it's rarely bad!

Those who have said you have to pay big bucks for a big steak, I disagree. Some of the best steaks I have had in Des Moines have been at Iowa Beef Steakhouse and it's half the price of 801. One of the main reasons you go to a place like 801 is the first class service, the wine selections and parings, and the attention to detail.
