Preview/Prediction: Iowa State vs. Iowa

This game will be decided in the first couple Hawkeye offensive possessions. If they run right through ISU like UNI did, the game is pretty much over. I agree with the shots downfield, as the Iowa pass defense was not very good against No. IL, and they were actually aided by several dropped balls.
Northern Illinois' defensive backs played very physical & consistently tackled Wiesman and Bullock. Their DL was lighter than ours, but they held their own enough for the LBs and more frequently, and their DBs (primarily their safeties) to make a lot of tackles coming up to fill gaps. If the WRs of Iowa are truly a weakness & we can count on our CBs playing tighter coverage, then we have a shot if our safeties can make the plays supporting the run while also not getting burned on any play action.
I'm hoping for Jeremiah George to stuff Weisman on every play (while Washington goes after the ball). On offense, this would be a great game for Bundrage to live up to his potential. This will open it up for Shontrelle Johnson to get 100+ on the ground again.

Miller picked ISU to win?
I know little about Iowa's first two games, so those must have been confidence-wreckers. I can see erring on the cautious side to balance any homer-tendencies, but —> ISU lost to UNI. At home. In non-fluke fashion.

With both fanbases feeling the way they do, it's clear it's going to be an ugly game. And I just can't agree with it being high scoring in any way.. ISU just doesn't do the whole offense thing. Even if the QB this year can, you know, complete passes.
If any of you have played the game at any level higher than high school, you know that things like 2 weeks ago happen. No one likes it, but they happen. Coach Rhoads has said from the beginning of this year, at this is his most talented team since he's been here. How many more wins that translates into isn't a science or a certainty. No one likes the results of the UNI game, but damnit guys, it happens.
i have watched Coach Rhoads coach up kids since he's been here. If he has the most talent he's had, has had two weeks to get them ready both physically and mentally, and the Hawks are in a down spin, I see the Cyclones walking out of Jack Trice with a 10-14 point win. I think it won't be a pounding, but will be convincing enough the game is not decided in the last 5 minutes.
CPR is a great motivator, and knows how to relate to young men this age. We aren't perfect, and never will be. Until we get a coach that gets us to the top, or competing there, AND STAYS, Iowa State doesn't have the tradition to get headlines and name recognition like so many other schools do. It wasn't that many years ago we played Alabama in a bowl game in Shrevport. But Alabama has brand name recognition, so getting to the top because they have the brand, the dollars, and recruit in the hotbed of high school football gives them a huge advantage.
Coach Rhoads has SEC history. He knows what it's like. If he gets us to the top, or close to it, and stays, we then have an opportunity to be like Kansas State. It can be done, but it is one mother of a tough job. Before you criticize this staff, or any for that matter, think earnestly how difficult it must be to get a real blue chipper to Ames out of the south, or the west coast given the fact Iowas reputation for weather alone is enough to make most Iowans leave for 3 months, and they live here. Think hard about that.
I'm betting on Paul. If we lose will I be disappointed? Yes. Will I give up or throw them under the bus? No. I see us winning by 10-14 in a somewhat comfortable, if not always pretty fashion. I'm a Cyclone no matter what.

Was CPR in the SEC longer than one year? I don't see how that part is relevant at all. I think the Chiz had more SEC experience when he arrived here.
Where we're all worked up is seeing the same issues arise whether we're more talented or not. This offense thing has gotten very old.
I apologize for how that came across, that's not what I meant. Big upsets in high school aren't as likely, just don't happen near as often as college. That came across as pompous and all knowing, and I didn't mean it to be. I was using my experience from college days in which I was on both ends of huge upsets. I've been a winner and a loser in those games. Sorry for the way it was worded. I do apologize.
Maybe the offensive thing is getting old, I get it...but it was our defense that was the major cause of that loss. I can see an offense struggling the first game, but the defense shouldn't as bad. That running back carved us up. My only point is that I think that part will get fixed, and anytime you have a great defense, they can keep you in most games.

Every other year, I would be griping about a bye week so early, but I'm hoping this extra week of preparation is just what this team needs to right the ship. Come on Clones we need a win outta ya!! Do it for Jack!! Do it for yourselves! Do it for the Gipper, heck I don't care just do it!!!!!!!!
The great part about the defense from game one to game two is adding Knott. Miller certaintly wasn't the only problem, but after rewatching the game yesterday, it was possibly the worst game I've ever.seen by an ISU LB. Out of position on all 3 touchdowns and got blown off the ball on nearly every running play. Hope the kid bounces back, but his first start was as brutal as they come.
Knott was one of the bright spots in that loss (didn't we have a silver linings thread or something...). I think it's going to be a total 540 from where we were on Aug 31st. Rivalry game will have them amped up. Real game film will have given Rhoads and staff areas to coach on. Players have a chip on their shoulder and are itching to get back on the field.
