Power inverter (tailgating)

Have a 400 watt inverter (800 watt peak) and it won't cut it with the crock pot. Doing chili again this weekend and want to get this upgraded. Our crock pot states it uses 280 watts so I'd think the 400 watt inverter we have would work, but it's very hit/miss. Was going to go with a 1000 watt inverter but wanted to discuss options.

Generators are ok, just don't want the noise. I know some quiet ones are out there, at one point a few years ago I saw a power pack that was charged and would run for 6 hours or so, can't find it again.

Anyone use a crock pot tailgating and if so - what inverter are you using?

Our tailgate group has used crock pots with the generator we've got, its one of those ultra quiet ones. I think this is the one..

Don't use an inverter, but I have a portable propane crock pot made by Coleman. It works awesome and I'm very happy with it. I got it on sale at Sportsman's for $30, but the website says retail is $69. Something you could look into if you can't find an inverter.

Yep thats it, go to Power Sports in Grimes and get a better price than Amazon has.

In the past when our group has done chili, we have used a turkey fryer. Works like a charm.

It depends on how much your crock pot needs and what else you want to do. My bike club has a 750 watt inverter from harbor freight for $50 or so. The two speed crock pot in our cupboard is rated a 135/210 watts, so not sure what you have that would be drawing that much. A lot of inverters will not operate well in the higher draw range if you plug them into a the lighter. That is why they always give you the alligator clips too.

Love this thing yet since we really only need it a couple of times each season, it's a bit overkill. Usually just grill and have not been using the TV for a few years. Just want to have chili 1-2 times per season.

A lot of inverters will not operate well in the higher draw range if you plug them into a the lighter. That is why they always give you the alligator clips too.

Yup, had connected it directly to the battery before and it wasn't always working.

We usually cook the chilli Friday and just use a Coleman stove or small grill to warm up the pot of chilli.

How loud is your car?

You cant even hear my Honda truck running during a tailgate. We use our 800 W power inverter to run a crockpot, flat screen TV, and antenna during tailgates without problems.... as long as I leave it running.

I figure the maybe 1 gallon of gas it might use is worth just letting it go for 8 hours.

And I still dont have to be 'that guy' that runs his generator to ruin the atmosphere for everyone else.

Agreed from earlier, just run it off the aligator clips.

This, except we cook our chili from scratch on game day using a Coleman cookstove. Looking forward to doing it tomorrow for the first time this season.

We plan to cook ours tonight as well. Our grill is a propane flattop, we talked about putting a pot on it, just wasn't sure if it would keep it hot enough.

Maybe your inverter is bad. My crockpot is a full sized one and I can't believe there a huge difference in the draw. We used ours to run a 1/2 inch electric drill, which I would expect to draw more than a crockpot.

I would concor that the inverter is bad. It could also be that the crock pot is bad, but if it has been used at home and worked every time, I would say inverter.
