So the plane takes off tomorrow night on Mythbusters. They should post that on youtube.

We can only say the same thing so many times, I don't know what else there is to add.

662 times, to be exact. I am enjoying the discussion, actually. But mostly the indignant animosity directed at those with opposing views.

Oh you think we are all saying the same thing now?! Wait until after the show and everyone can't start arguing about the faults in the lab set up. My argument will be about the friction, and Mu. If and only if I must go down that road after the show ;)
Heck this thread can go on for at least another 2000 post.

My prediction -- The plane is going to fly and the "flat-earthers" are going to continue to argue that it shouldn't have and the setup was wrong to make it work correctly. People are more interested in proving their point usually ..... than they are in learning something and understanding it and embracing it.

I predict righteous proclamations of intellectual superiority and untold levels of scorn directed at those of opposing views following the broadcast.

I don't think they should be called views with a science question like this. There is one correct answer. One group is clearly right, and one is clearly wrong.

Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies. Rivers and seas boiling. Forty years of darkness. Earthquakes, volcanoes... The dead rising from the grave. Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together - mass hysteria!!!

What's really sad is the one that is clearly wrong happens to be a HS science teacher... WTF??? :twitcy:

As interesting as it would be to read through hundreds of posts, i don't have the time...but I do teach JH and HS science and if the plane is not actually moving and the wheels are just turning in place on the treadmill, it wouldn't matter how fast the plane is going, it will not take flight.

What's funny is my intial post saying "if the plane is not actually moving and the wheels are just turning in place on the treadmill, it wouldn't matter how fast the plane is going, it will not take flight." I simply say that if the plane's wheels are moving in place and the plane is not actually moving it will not be able to fly.

Yes, I teach science.

No, I do not build airplanes or no much about them other than riding in coach is terribly uncomfortable.

My scientific reasoning was about bernoulli's principle and how if air is not moving past the wings and creating high and low pressure above and below the wings there would be no lift. Which is absolutely true. I definitely never had to learn in college nor have I had to teach about the wheels turning independently of the plane itself. I admitted I was wrong about that.

So can we just chill out about that and quit trying to rip on people?

I think the problem was that we tried and failed to explain that to you multiple times and you just wouldn't listen.

Agreed. This thread has gotten a little nasty. I believe this is supposed to be a fun debate.

Up next: Does the motion of the earth really cause toilet bowl spin? It doesn't. But someone will argue it does.
