Just wanting some advice for good places to eat in Lincoln, NE. I'll be attending a conference there next week and want to know if anyone has suggestions for places I can go. I should mention that I'm staying downtown and might not have access to a car (I'll be very close to the Haymarket)
TIA!

Well, if you went to ISU, or lived in Ames, prior to about 2005, then you'll want to be sure to get your nostalgia on and go to DaVinci's. Their chicken cheese steaks were awesome.

Back in 2005 went to a pizza place called Lazzari's (spelling?). From what I remember it was great.

For non-chain restaurants, I'd suggest Lazlo's for american food, Blue Orchid for Thai and Asian, Bison Witches for deli sandwiches, Vincenzo's for Italian, The Oven for Indian, Capital City Grill for decent priced higher end food, and Ivanna Cone for ice cream. All are around the Haymarket area except Bison Witches. They have a 5 Guys near Bison Witches, but that's a chain restaurant (although not in Iowa).

I traveled with a fella that said he absolutely had to go to Vincenzo's every time he drove by Lincoln. We went and it wasn't bad. I don't know if I'd drive to Lincoln especially for it, but you could do a lot worse.

Lazlo's is about as good as it gets down in the Haymarket. Also down in the Haymarket there is Brix & Stone (British gastro pub), El Portablo (mexican), Brewskys (bar food- tons of tv's), Vencenzo's (Italian), Old Chicago (pizza). Then downtown there is Lazzari's (pizza), Mistys (steakhouse- spendy but recommend highly), Firehouse Subs, Jersey Mikes (subs), Chipotle, Applebees.

PM me if you want to know more.

I went here when I went for a work trip one time: Lazlo's Brewery and Grill

It was pretty solid. Way better than that crap-hole Runza.

Do NOT besmirk Runza....they have fairly decent burgers and very good fries. (for fast food)

Lazlo's is a good choice, so is Vincenzo's. There are a couple of DaVinci's in town, not sure which one is closest to Haymarket. Misty's, while not necessarily in Haymarket, is a great prime rib place. I believe it's located at 12th and P.

Are you staying at the Holiday Inn? I know it's chain, but Old Chicago is right across the street.

I didn't try the burgers, everyone kept telling me I had to do the actual Runza. It was just blech!!

cyinne pretty much summed it all up for you. There are a number of good options, with very few of them being affected by Arena/Canopy Street construction. Here's my two cents:

The Best: Lazlo's, Bread & Cup, Ivanna Cone, Vincenzo's, Misty's
Pretty good: Dozo, El Potrero, The Oven
Too expensive for your own good: JTK, Dish
Overrated: Brix & Stone
Other: Old Chicago, Applebee's, Noodles & Company, Five Guys, BWW, Chipotle...

For the record, Runza's food is pretty good...the Runza's themselves are not much to be desired. Too much bread and they fall apart too easy. When I tell people Runza (restaurant) is good but the Runza (food item) is not, I get nothing but the old fashioned "...well, you're originally from Iowa so you wouldn't understand" line.

Technically, BisonWitches IS a chain - there's one in Tempe I've been to, and also apparently in Tuscon and Norman OK. But it's still badass. BisonWitches.com - Home of Bison Witches Bar & Deli - Main Page

It appears there's also a Pepperjax Grill in downtown Lincoln at 14th and O. Very good Philly cheesesteaks and burritos. It's a place in the vein of Pancheros, where you see them make the sandwich/burrito in front of you, cooking, chopping, and seasoning the meat just for your sandwich.
