Horribly written article that made the timeline confusing. I think this is the order of events:

1. Adopted her and took her to the doctor for an exam. Doctor tells them she is 8 year old. Or, maybe the doctor told them this before the adoption went through?

2. They begin to realize she is not 8, but an adult with dwarfism.

3. They changed (legally?) her age to 22 so they could abandon her legally.

4. The move to Canada.

I think it was something along those lines. Those few sentences in the article jumped around the time line 3 in a way that was very confusing.
I was getting a headache trying to figure out the timeline. Thanks!

Try this timeline.
  • Kristine Barnett, 45, and ex-husband Michael Barnett, 43 have been charged with abandoning their daughter when she was 9 in Lafayette, Indiana, and fleeing to Canada
  • In an exclusive interview with DailyMail TV, Kristine denies the claims and says she and Michael were victims of a fraud, claiming the girl they adopted was an adult con artist who tried to kill her
  • Kristine and Michael agreed to the emergency adoption of Ukrainian-born Natalia Grace in May 2010 from Florida and were told she was 6
  • Within a year, Kristine claims Natalia tried pushing her onto an electric fence, poured bleach into her coffee and threatened to stab the Barnetts in their sleep
  • Natalia was treated by mental health specialists who determined she was an adult and pressed for the courts to have her birth certificate changed
  • In 2012, Marion County Superior Court in Indianapolis decided Natalia was born in 1989, based upon medical evidence
  • The Barnetts moved to Canada and left Natalia in an apartment in Lafayette
  • A September 11 affidavit of probable cause obtained by DailyMailTV states that experts carried out bone density tests on Natalia in June 2010 and concluded she was eight year old
  • Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department allege that Natalia was a child when they 'abandoned' her in 2013
  • Arrest warrants were issued. Both Michael and Katherine surrendered to authorities and have been released on bail

Essentially they had conflicting information as to her age in 2010. They ignored the bone density tests and went with the "mental health specialists" determination and "medical evidence" that said she was an adult. They probably didn't provide the bone density results to the court that declared her a 22 year old adult in 2012 which would explain why they are in hot water now.

Agree it wasn't written well. I actually drew it out to understand the timeline.

That article said there was another couple that tried to accept guardianship of the adopted person and there was a more in-depth look at the evidence at that time only for the court to accept that the adopted person was over 20 years old and couldn't be adopted again. What a cluster of crazy this whole thing is. All this and the adopted person is no where to be found? WTF is this?

So the pubic hair and pack of cigarettes she had didn't clue the Dr in that she was an adult?

Not exactly sure.
Pushed on an electric fence? That wouldn’t kill you. I grew up with them and walked into enough that I can attest to that. Peeing on them won’t either, stimulates growth for your wanker though.
