Ozzie Smith autographed baseball

I have an Ozzie Smith autographed baseball. My nephew is a big Cardinal fan. I thought about giving it to him, but my buddy thinks I should keep it.

Don't get me wrong, I think The Wizard" is great. In fact, any you Cardinal fans can get his autograph easily because he goes to Clarinda each year for the Clarinda A's fundraiser.

But I think my nephew would appreciate it more.

What would any of you do in my shoes?

BTW, I am prepared for the obligitory "Did you really have to start a thread" post.

If you never have plans to sell it, give it to him since he would love it. Make sure you have the stipulation that he never sell it either since you have some feelings towards this ball.

Ozzie Smith sat beside me on a plane once when I was 15. I had him sign my barf bag. Unfortunately, I have since lost it. I am sure that thing could have brought in some cash.

Its ok as long as they live next to an old dude who has all of that stuff on hand to replace it.

Not as cool as an Ozzie ball but I had a friend play at Iowa and was a grad assistant on the 04 team. I had him get the entire teams autograph for my little cousin who was in our wedding. He is a big Iowa fan and if I was an Iowa fan it was worth it to see how cool he thought it was. Still has it on a shelf in his room.

Personally I'd give it away but that's because well, I don't see the total value in this. I mean it's just a regular ball signed by Ozzie Smith, who apparently signs everything meaning (a) the value isn't as great because it's just a regular object (it's not like he signed the bat he hit a game winning homer off of or something) and (b) it sounds like the sentimental value might not be tons to you?

How old is your nephew? If he's like 10 or you know, around that age, giving him this ball would probably make you his favorite...FYI

Heck, I have a ball autographed by the entire '85 Cardinal team, and I have no illusions of retiring off of it...

This kind of stuff is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, which probably isn't much...give it to the kid.

Exactly. That's why I said I didn't know his sentimental value. If he's wanting to get a lot of money off of this, good luck, but I mean ...if you had an Ozzie Smith ball and you weren't a huge cards/ozzie smith fan but your relative was...I'd totally give it up to someone who would appreciate the item more than me.


Hell, I have an autographed Jeff Bagwell rookie card from 1991 but it's only worth like $30. The only reason I keep it is because it's my first ever autographed item.

Ozzie autographs are a dime a dozen in Clarinda (my home town). He comes back for that banquet every winter and signs as many autographs as people want. Not to talk it up, but I seriously have probably 10-15 Ozzie autographs. We take it for granted.

I have a game played ball signed by Ozzie and Von Hayes, grandpa was mayor back in the day lol. I don't know that I could authenticate it as a game ball, and it's mostly sentimental mire than anything.

I have a very large baseball memorabilia collection (mostly cards...but several autographs and other novelties too).

I would definitely give it to my nephew. It isn's worth much and can easily be replaced. No brainer for me.
