I've read more than once that Degen will be OK. It appears the above avg wrestlers are figuring him out. He's gifting away points and no way he sees the podium unless he figures it out.
I don't want to be negative with Degen. Last year, he was the one giving us the most to cheer about! The downside this year is that I'm not seeing much improvement. Though he is slightly similar to St.John, his unconventional style might be hard for the coaches to work with. Unless he suddenly starts getting better at defending shots, he will have a hard time improving much. When he's been successful, it is usually because of some wrestlers not being able to handle his style (or his gas tank). As you said, the better wrestlers are starting to game plan for it.

This year, Degen has beaten Mauller, Lugo, Rohlfing, and Olivas who are all ranked in the top 20. His style leads to some inconsistency, but he is having a far better year than he did last year.

Going in to this year I was worried that his NCAA performance last season might have been a one time fluke where he just got really hot at the right time but so far this season he's showed it wasn't. He'll need a good weekend and the right draw to AA but he seems ranked about right in the 10-12 range.

Personally I’d like to see Degen try and bulk up. He has some skills that may be better utilized if he had increased strength.

I’m also surprised he isn’t better riding on top. That may be a strength issue too but most of those long guys are hammers. Increasing his top game could do wonders.

I'm not just looking at results. I don't see improvements in his technique. The inconsistency is what I'm referring to. Inconsistency is what you can typically expect out of Freshmen. It usually happens because they are not technically sound in various situations which some opponents can take advantage of. You hope that improves as they gain experience. I'm not seeing it with Degen, yet.

Also...looking at his match results for last year and this year and they aren't much different.

Again, I'm not down on Degen. I just hope he starts to get better in more conventional style situations. If he does, he will be extremely difficult to beat.

The problem is that his style depends on being a lot taller than his average opponent and we'll have Carr at 157 next year so he'd have to bulk all the way up to 165 and that would really hurt his height advantage.

You have to consider that Jarrett isn't the most talented kid. His style is different and he is a match up problem for a lot of guys. He also is a hard worker and consistently putting pressure on guys, but he isn't strong and overly athletic.

But he wasn't highly recruited (#83 on Flowrestling 2016 Big Board) and is actually overachieving by most standards. Take a look at some of the names around him. Some of those guys are doing absolutely nothing. There are also some big names right now who were ranked behind him. But Degen is going to be who he is his whole college career. I don't think you can expect a top 3 guy in him.

Degen: I think you see improvements in the techniques he uses. He is never going to be the solid, basics-style wrestler. He has some good wins, a couple losses maybe he wishes he could take back, but overall will be in the hunt for a top-12 finish again.

Willie is wrestling well. I think his overall personality makes it seem like he is "disinterested" but he is out there competing hard. Some matches have had some bad match management (Warner match especially) but he is winning. Random close matches will happen with him, but just like has been mentioned, his post-season wrestling has always been a notch above what he shows in the regular season. Perfect leader to have on this team of younger guys. Maybe the most underrated part of how this team is performing was adding him as the old man of the group.

saw this scrolling through twitter. Looks like a no call on a locked hands. Bummer.

Frustrating that not even the second ref could see it. I saw it clear as day on my computer screen and was certain they would at least review it.
