Fuskers are getting crazy

NU Football: Osborne is interim head coach
BY MITCH SHERMAN
WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

•

.

The 70-year-old interim athletic director appointed himself Wednesday as interim head coach.

Make no mistake, Osborne is not about to reappear on the sideline. His new title is only temporary. NU made the move, informing the Big 12 in a letter written by Compliance Director Gary Bargen, so Osborne would be able to recruit away from campus.

Osborne, who won 255 games and three national titles as NU coach from 1973 to 1997, passed the NCAA certification test — a series of multiple-choice and true-false questions — on his first attempt Wednesday.

Osborne plans to hit the road today and Friday.

NCAA rules stipulate that the head coach is allowed only one in-home visit to a potential recruit. But a provision allows the coach Osborne hires to visit any recruit whom Osborne visited as interim head coach.

In addition, Osborne could remain on staff, technically as an assistant, to visit recruits after the head coach is named.

Presumably, that's coming soon. The fifth day of Nebraska's coaching search produced no names of additional candidates.

Osborne and UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman interviewed Louisiana State defensive coordinator Bo Pelini on Sunday in Baton Rouge. University of Buffalo coach Turner Gill and Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe reportedly also have met with Nebraska officials.

In a radio interview Wednesday night on the Husker Sports Network, Osborne said the search was "pretty much on track."

He said he expects it to near an end by next week. He also confirmed that he had interviewed multiple candidates.

"I'm not saying that we're done yet, but I think we're really in pretty good shape," Osborne said.

He said all of the candidates understand the game. All have experienced success in coaching, he said, and are "very passionate about football."

None appeared driven by money.

"Now having said that, it does seem the going rate on salaries has really gone through the roof a little bit," Osborne said. "A little bit amazing."

Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly on Wednesday denied any contact with Nebraska. Kelly also said UC Athletic Director Mike Thomas had not been asked permission by NU to speak with him.

That's contrary to a report by rivals.com on Tuesday.

"Just another one of those Internet stories," Kelly told Cincinnati radio station WCKY. "I think a lot of these things are generated by who you think the best candidate is, and those Internet stories start to run and get twisted around."

Pelini continued to prepare LSU's defense for its meeting Saturday with Tennessee in the Southeastern Conference championship game. Gill, meanwhile, also may be a candidate for the vacant coaching job at Washington State.

Gill, the 45-year-old former Nebraska quarterback and assistant coach, was named in an Associated Press story as an option to replace Bill Doba, who resigned Monday.

In other news, defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove and cornerbacks coach Phil Elmassian are no longer recruiting for Nebraska, according to Associate A.D. for Communications Randy York. Osborne asked the NU assistants who wished to be considered for positions by the next head coach to help with recruiting after coach Bill Callahan was fired Saturday.

That is crap two in home visits one now by Osborne and then by the new coach. Just another loop hole in the NCAA rules and then they can keep him on to help recruiting. I really think that this is leading to Gill being the new coach.

If I'm a recruit outside of the state of Nebraska, getting a visit from grandpa Osborne isn't going to do much for me. The Husker mystique is dead and it would seem very cheesy to have him sitting in my living room waxing poetic about the glory days of the power option and Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crotch.

Maybe it 's just me, but I think having anyone in a recruits living room that has a national championship ring on his finger isn't going to hurt, no matter how old he is.

He's still a legend in many corners, even outside Nebraska.

But you're right, and 17/18 year old kid was, what? 7 when he last coached. Most are going - "Who?"

wow it only took him one attempt. He must have studied hard. Good to know though.

Well, with questions like

"Spell NCAA", "You are taking this test. True or False"

you can see how you're average Husker could manage...

Re: Fuskers are getting crazy

It's all about Osborne's ego. He is so revered by everyone in Neb and by others for what he has accomplished, but his ego is HUGE. Consider what he has done after his retirement all in the interest of what is best for the people of Neb.
  • Hand picked his successor - Frank Solich. Only hope he repeats on that success.
  • Gets one of his old assistants the AD job when they hired Pederson.
  • Misses the limelight so runs for Congress in a western Nebraska district that he doesn't live in.
  • Has little to no impact on moving up the ranks of Reb. leadership in Washington, so decides that he would be more important if he were to become Gov. of Neb.
  • Runs in the primary for Gov against a sitting Gov.
  • Gets his ego crushed when he loses by a huge margin. Needs to do something to redeem himself so he....
  • Gets himself to be "crowned" Prince or something of the AKSARBEN knights. If you haven't seen the pictures in the OWH with T.O. in tights you have to check it out!
  • After UNL got humiliated by Okie St during the 10 year reunion of his last NC, he forces the Chancellor to fire Pederson and name him AD. T.O. could come in and save the day!
  • In his presser announcing the he fired Cally, one of the first things he talks about is his 4th season and how they went 10-2.
  • Names himself interim Coach
I could go on all day, but I think you get the point. This is all about T.O. The fuskers are too in love with GOD to realize that it is his ego that gave them the Solich/Pederson/Cally mess, and too dumb to realize that his ego is about to do it again to them!

Re: Fuskers are getting crazy

It makes sense that Osborne would be leaning toward hiring Turner Gill then. Osborne was a former coach of his and is now somewhat of a mentor as they talk to each other frequently. This would make it very easy for T.O. to impose his will upon the coach under the guise of "advice." It would also pave the way to force Gill to hire some other NU cronies so that they can "keep it in the family" over here. It's almost comical sometimes living in the middle of this twisted drama.

Re: OWH: Osborne says interview process incomplete

If that's the case, why then would TO spend 2 days out on the recruiting trail. IMO, TO saying that the process is incomplete is nothing more than a smoke screen.

Once again, it about HIS ego. He'll claim credit for bringing them in.

You may be right. I think they'd a hard time finding another coach that would be comfortable with T.O. as an "assistant" always looking over his shoulder.
