Trying to mix it up here on the OTN postings. Some weeks I'll concentrate on an artist or writer, as I did last two times with Burt Bacharach four weeks ago and Crowded House two weeks ago.

This week I'm pushing a different idea. Songs where the words in the song title are not included in the lyrics. The idea actually came to me as I was driving back to Florida last week and thinking about additional long or short songs to add to @cyclones500's OTN post. I happened to remember the CSN song Suite: Judy Blue Eyes as a long song. Then as I was pondering that I began to think about other 'hit' or well known songs where the title does not appear in the lyrics of the song.

It can be very strict. Do NONE of the words in the title appear in the song? Or just not the title in its exact verbatim form? I tend to go for the former definition, but if you have a good one under the other definition that's just eating at you, go ahead and post.

When I bounced this idea off of @cyclones500 he put a little twist on it. Based on the lyrics, what SHOULD the song title be?

Of course instrumentals are ineligible for this category. They all meet the criteria.

This also gives me a chance to post some random-ish songs, so that's fun too:

The story goes that as Clapton and George Harrison were writing the song, George wrote 'bridge' at the appropriate location on the composition. Eric was reading it upside down and thought it said 'Badge'. Having no other song title it stuck. This one doesn't really have an obvious song title in the lyrics. Best I can come up with is Bring the Curtain Down.

Of course it's a Dylan composition. He had a run of songs that fit the topic including: From a Buick 6; Positively 4th Street; Subterranean Homesick Blues and Rainy Day Women #12 and 35.

Real title should be: Younger Than That Now

Without a doubt my favorite Alice Cooper song and one that gets literally no airplay these days. Maybe I like it because I was a high school graduate, class of '74. But more probably because it's a great song. (Well there's a real square cat, he looks like 1974). And no, I never wore gold lame' jeans. Song title should be, "What Are You Gonna Do?"

Definitely one of my favorite Monkees offerings. Evidently the UK record company didn't approve the title (meaning in UK parlance, Horny bum from Liverpool) and suggested the group substitute an alternate title. The group did just that - the song was titled "Alternate Title" in the UK. And for the double whammy, those words aren't in the lyrics either! Title should be "Why Don't You..."

Their first US Chart success, I remember when it came out wondering if there was an actual New York Mining Disaster in 1941. There was not. Great song though! Title should be, "Have You Seen My Wife Mr. Jones?"

Several excellent examples already by @MeanDean. A few overlap with my immediate list, but a few others that didn't come to mind. (I have Randy Scouse and Tubthumping, considered Interstate Love Song, too).

I'll post a few others shortly.

A few of mine, for starters. Coming in multiple posts as I accumulate.

Includes actual song title, band/artist and “How would a listener name it, if unaware of official title?” (Suggestions for nomenclature that vary from mine are encouraged :))

For What It’s Worth, Buffalo Springfield
“There’s Something Happening Here” / “Stop, Children, What’s That Sound?” / “What’s That Sound?”

Train in Vain, The Clash
“You Say You Stand By Your Man” / “Did You Stand By Me?”

The Who - Baba O'Riley

Obvious title: Teenage Wasteland. Other non lyric title: What Is That Weird Music at the Beginning?

This was the first one I thought of.

Oh, and the opening instrumental is played on an organ.

A more modern tune that I really love:
Unfortunately the lyics make so little sense that it's hard to find a "More obvious title"

I'd probably go with "Ey, Ey, Ey, Ey!"

Muse is one of my all time favorite bands. Even though I think they've fallen off a bit recently. Looking through my collection they are pretty common users of the non-lyric title.

Bliss
They could have called it "Peace and Joy" but that's a terrible title, so I'm glad they went with Bliss

Hysteria
"I Want it Now"
My all time favorite Muse song. The video is a bit NSFW, by the way, but also awesome.

Knights of Cydonia
"No One's Gonna Take Me Alive"
Another epic video depicting a space cowboys opera of sorts. Love it.
