We didn't have a lot of money when I was a kid, and that movie has a lot of ups and a lot of downs for both Marsha Mason and Richard Dreyfuss's characters. The only thing I could think in terms of a lesson was deal with the "downs" and appreciate the "ups" but always "keep your wits about you," one of her favorite terms. When I went to ISU they used to show movies in Carver Hall for free. My girlfriend at the time and I watched this movie there. We’ve been married for 43 years. I’ve always liked the movie and the song, but I’m not sure what lesson your mom had in mind!
