One I still sing to myself occasionally, Phil Phillips' Sea of Love:

Another from that period, Johnny Preston's Running Bear:

Just learned this:

"Running Bear" is a song written by J. P. Richardson (aka The Big Bopper) He is also singing background on this hit released and charted nearly a year after his death on "The Day The Music Died" 2-3-59.

This is THE version of Proud Mary as done properly by Ike and Tina Turner:

This is what turned me on to Tina Turner; later when I learned what an (disgusting anatomical reference here) Ike was, I almost stopped playing their recordings. I couldn't stop completely though, too good.

Ha, I had kind of thought the Cat Power song may have been a cover but never really looked it up. Thanks for posting.

Here's Pat Boone with his Love Letters In The Sand:

Lyrics mention the tide "You laughed when I cried, each time I saw the tide, wash our love letters from the sand." and waves breaking over my love letters.

Another favorite that was a pop hit and a staple of the collegiate folk singers was The Highwaymen's "Michael (Row The Boat Ashore)":

Lyrics mention the River Jordon.

Not quite that old is Gerry & the Pacemakers with their "Ferry Cross The Mersey":
