Edit: Changed thread title to reflect for generic space discussion.

New Glenn Launch

Not sure why the Starship thread got closed, but here's one for discussing Starship's main competitor, New Glenn. The NG-1 mission is scheduled to launch tonight (Jan 11) at midnight CST after many, many delays. They were ready a few days ago but seas were too rough for the landing.

Looks like they're going to attempt to land the massive booster on a drone ship 600 miles off the coast of Florida. If they pull that off, it will be incredible and give Jeff Bezos a little bit of bragging rights over Starship, even though Starship is still way ahead.

New Glenn and Blue Origin have a special place in my heart because my daughter, an ISU engineering grad works on New Glenn and has some software running on a few of the controllers on the booster and second stage. She has a mentor that is pretty high up that is also an ISU grad.

LFG!!!

Sucks this thing is launching at midnight. This is awesome though. Hopefully it goes perfectly. The space industry needs competition to keep pushing the boundaries.

My daughter told me she thinks this is an FAA rule … that the maiden flight of a rocket must be done when traffic is minimal in the area in case something goes wrong.

Not really as they issue TFRs (Temporary Flight Restrictions) that basically does not allow any non participating aircraft in the area. Coast Guard does similar for marine stuff.

With the Starship thread locked, can we start another general launch thread? Or convert this one to just a spaceflight/launch thread? Starship Flight 7 is coming up in ~30 hrs, so was just curious for that!

Pretty cool night last night. Got to orbit successfully and the experimental payload seems to be functioning.

Didn't get close to landing the booster on the drone ship. It seems like when they lit the 3 engines on the booster to start slowing down something bad happened and there wasn't any more video or data from the booster after that.

My daughter was in the big room at the Kent, WA engineering facility watching the launch. She said when the rocket cleared the tower the room was about as loud as the Kansas game at Hilton last night.

On to NG-2 in the spring!

That was the Falcon 9 launch though right? Starship is still planned for today?
