The additions to the league are finding out just like in football just how much tougher a P5 league play is night in and night out. BYU is looking better than the other three, but it's just a huge jump in talent every night over what they are used to playing. Its one thing to play a salty Memphis team a couple of times a year, then relax playing halfass teams for a couple of weeks. There are no easy games in this conference and Houston and Cincinnati will have to get use to that fact.

Sorry, I don't remember too many people suggesting he would start over King and that's what I was addressing specifically. I'm sure some thought he would start. Certainly everyone thought he would contribute more than he has. It's been dissaponting, and I'm sure he would agree with that. That said, we've also had players who I feel have exceeded expectations like Ward. He's turned into a really good player. And Jones has taken another step in his development as well. So overall while Omaha has been dissapointing we've had other players step up their game a lot and frankly the fact Omaha hasn't lived up to expectations just don't matter that much IMO. We've got a hell of a team regardless.
Omaha was a pretty regular prediction in the preseason starting 5 prediction threads.

I think the frustration is that we see these McDs AA caliber 1 and done lottery pick players at other schools year after year taking over games and raising those teams to new heights. We watch guys like that come through KU all the time. And we just have to sit and watch because ISU just doesn't recruit at that level. Then we finally get the stars to align and grab one, and instead of looking like the piece that could put us over the top, he gets nothing but garbage time minutes.

If a recruit like this doesn't pan out at KU or Duke then oh well, they will sign a couple more next year. ISU may not get another one ranked this high for 20 years.

I think the future here could still be very bright, but the here and now just isn't what we were hoping and dreaming for.

Yeah, but we have that freshman. It's just not the guy you expected it to be. Did we strike out on Omaha, yes. But in most other regards we are exceeding expectations when it comes to the unknown variables coming in to this season. You can always say "well if this had gone differently our team would be better", but overall I think the fortunes are breaking for this to be a pretty special team. That's why it frustrates me that everyone focuses on Omaha so much. Now we know he's not going to contribute much this season. Move on.

I try to be on the more positive side when it comes to ISU athletics.

Look at the player achievements of those that are playing extended minutes. Can we be happy that they are currently playing better than a 5* that is adapting to college level play?

Their team a couple years ago that lost to 1 seed Arizona in OT was very obviously under seeded and would have done damage almost anywhere else in the bracket. They absolutely obliterated their 8/9 game as a 9.
Big 12 teams will always be under seeded. As long as the Big 12 is so tough like it is (it has been like this for about 10 years) teams accumulate losses they wouldn't have had if they played in other leagues. Those same teams would enter the tournament with better seeds and more wins if they hadn't had to go through the gauntlet of the Big 12. Meanwhile a league like the Big 10 gets propped up and gifted 9 bids a year and they can barely ever get anyone out of the first weekend.

Huggy sounded off on the Big 12 last year. He said he has been coaching a lot of years and in other leagues, until someone has gone through this league, they have no idea how brutal it is, he said he had never seen anything like this.

I was trying to recall (without doing any research) how many "comfortable" wins we've had in Big 12 the past few seasons. Probably more than I remember, but I still don't think it has been frequent.

Expectation was for both freshman to be MAJOR contributors. Milan isn’t exceeding expectations; he is as good as advertised, and that a huge to him and the staff.

Yes but since then there have been some very good front courts.

Ejim/George
Jackson/Homan
Hubalek/Clark
Brackins/Johnson/Clark

Also let's give Stevie his due. It wasn't all Fizer.

And Paul Shirley was an NBA guy. That team was pretty deep.

'MAJOR'?

Can you find anything that would back this up?

Iirc here was a lot of hype around Omaha but don't recall a ton about Milan.

OSU has some stud athletes and I don't think they are a bad team, but they've started conference play at 0-3 and when I look at the rest of their conference schedule, I'm afraid they're in for a VERY LONG season.

The here and now is exactly what I want it to be. 2-1 in conference with a win over #2. This ******* awesome. People were worried we’d start 0-6 or 1-5, calling 2-4 a “win”.

Agree, but now we hit the road to BYU and TCU where odds makers predict we'll lose both.

I think the key is to just keep focusing on what's immediately in front of us and not look further down the road or in the rear view mirror. It would be good for fans to do that too.

Martin Rancik in the 1999-2000 frontcourt too although I recall he was out for a while and didn't play all that much.

They are awful offensively. But the effort is there and defensively they aren't bad. So think of ISU last year but worse offensively and not as good on defense... So, yeah a long session.

He was a McDonalds All American, 5 star recruit, on U19 Team USA. Any of his peers not playing on their Teams?

It's all good that ISU is winning, but I understand why people thought Omaha would be playing. Expectation was that he would be one of the best players on the Team. Would ISU not be better if he actually was better than Tre King? That's the depressing part. The thought was a recruit like that raises Teams ceiling. And he was talked about as a one year player not a development. I would say for me it's more confusing then depressing, but I get it.
I'm not checking rosters, but not many players off last seasons MAA team would be playing over Tre King. My biggest question Watching this season is how the hell was Milan not a McDonald's All American?
