I am convinced that Iowa State athletics is cursed. Yet from what? Maybe Dan...? Maybe the Knapp/Storms demo?

I am too, but we've been cursed long before the 2 examples you mentioned happened. We just got a few good years to higher our expectations and get our hopes up before the curse slammed us back into reality.

Sometimes I wonder if ISU was built on ancient burial grounds or something along those lines....

Everything started heading down when Pete Taylor died in March 03.

-Larry Eustachy was gone 2 months later, and nobody wanted the job so we gave it to WM.
-The 2003 football season was an absolute disaster.

It wasn't that long ago, we had a lot wins in basketball and football. These things cycle.

Our wreslers, womens baskeball and volleyball are doing very well. Track and gymnastics are improving.

I don't think we're cursed.

You know that's a good point. He was the glue that held things together, but the ship was starting to list pretty badly anyway.

Wow you must be young. I wish you were around for the 80's and some of the beat downs from back then.

Who led us to the NIT final 4 and the NCAA second round
with LE's players
And we made two bowls the next two years

But yet were still disappointed because we choked away 2 big 12 north championships, and those 2 bowls were pretty minor bowls.

well sure, but that 1999-2002 period had to be a peak for the program. I'll admit i didnt see a lot of the 90s games until we started beating iowa. (I'm 24)

Then again, the pete taylor theory doesnt explain the hampton loss, or the game in Boise...

I was there in the 80's and you are absolutely correct! I still remember all to well the last 5 games of the fall of 1980 season.

You have to remain hopeful. With all the bad, I still remember the 1999-2001 period that was pretty good (two BBall titles, Insight Bowl trip.)

Hard to believe it was that long ago.

Well it depends on when the curse started. For me, I will just go ahead and say it started 2005. That was WM's 3rd year as BBall coach and he got fired and didn't make post season. For football the last year we made a bowl game was 2005. So, I'm blaming our lack of success over the past 4ish years on the ISU students who started school Fall '05. Maybe when all of them graduate and leave ISU, we will get back to bowl games and NCAA tournys. And most of them should be gone this year or next. That is when ISU athletics will get turned back around.:jimlad::biglaugh:

1930s -- ISU FB coach makes huge recruiting gaffe. Nile Kinnick Sr. played FB for ISU. His son wasn't given the time of day by the Cyclone staff, so he played...."elsewhere".

1940s -- FB official who had also worked for the DM Register calls an ISU player out of bounds, when he actually scored a TD. ISU loses game to Oklahoma, finishes season 6-1-1 (3-1-1 Big Six).

1970s -- The untimely death of Maury John led to Lynn Nance and Ken Trickey; Johnny Majors was quoted as wanting to slug an ISU professor for the professor's disparaging comments about the role of athletics at an academic institution; Woody Hayes hitting the Clemson player, combined with an indifferent ISU administration, leads to Donnie Duncan and Jim Criner instead of John Cooper (who played at ISU).

I remember back in those days thinking that we were probably at the peak.

In 2000 or 2001 we were something like one of 3 or 4 schools that had the three major sports teams ranked in the top 25 exit polls (football, MBB, WBB)

Actually it ..."the curse" started in 1957 when Jim Myers quit after one football season and said..."Iowa State will never be a winner"...

So there you have it the genesis of the dreaded CURSE!!!

It Lives & It Breathes...."THE CURSE"!!!!:biglaugh:
