That’s a fallacy. There’s no functional difference between redshirting and not playing. Let’s say Long transferred this past offseason to a lower program, he would still only play in college for 3 seasons whether he redshirted last year or not. On the other hand, if you redshirt and don’t transfer, you could trade a unproductive freshman year for a very productive 5th year senior season.

There is a difference. I believe if you redshirt you don't get to travel to the away games. Can someone confirm? For the new recruits all talking about how close they are, that could matter a lot.

Perhaps it isn’t clear, but the context is about maintaining eligibility.

Its the only problem with bringing in just eligible players instead of 1 or 2 sit out transfers, not everyone is going to get to play on a full roster so in the end red shirting a freshman is actually a really smart idea especially if they are behind a lot of upperclassmen. Iowa definitely needs to do that with a post this year because there is no way 1 or 2 will play more than 20 min total this year.

"Invested in ISU" ?? Well yeah, he's gonna be playing here, along with all the other recruits. In today's college basketball, it's basically up to the kid, and kids want to play. Especially when you come in with a couple of good friends.

Just out of curiosity, who was the last player to redshirt for Iowa St, that wasn't academic, injury, or transfer related?
He is a legacy and hence I think him transferring is slightly less likely than average bear. Plus he seems like the kind of kid that will put in time and. It need instant gratification. He knows he has to beef up for a year. Sure if he totally doesn't pan out matbe then he transfers but i totally expect him to pan out and be a complete stud, abd he just doesn't seem like the type a kid to bolt after a year if he doesn't play in year one knowing he will. Posts are different. Typical recruit i would put odds at redshitt at under 3%, but for him it may make sense. My guess more like 40%. Depends on how he develops over next year physically. It wouldn't suprise me if he put on 15 lbs and Prohm wanted to use him right away. But people that dismiss the possibility out of hand are dumb.

^^^Injury related.

I guess I should have asked, the last kid to redshirt and actually contribute.

Redshirting to "bulk up" is 90's basketball.
Literally everyone knows this yet you guys always feel the need to state anytime anyone brings up redshirting. Nobody is disputing it is uncommon in modern basketball, nor have I heard anyone say it is even likely. Just more likely than the average recruit in our opinion. I think he has a ton of upside and given how much he has grown recently and how thick his dad is think there is a good chance he packs on 15-20 lbs before next basketball season. And I agree even if he doesn't he still could be a contributer as a true freshman given so many unknowns. Anyway it isn't worth arguing about. Kid will decide what's right for him as he should.

Fran thinks he can go 13 deep. Why? Because he's Fran.

Would not be mad at signing Harris in the spring if we have a scholarship open up for him, but at that point I would hope we prioritize a transfer position of need. We have 4 quality freshman coming in, I think it would be better for class balance if we got an upperclassman.

Looking at the scholarship chart, it seems like our roster balance is perfect right now. 3 open spots for 19-20 and 6 for 20-21 (3 of which would be filled by 19-20 recruits). That doesn't account for attrition/early entry/etc, but it looks about as balanced as it gets.

Espn seems to almost have quit the recruiting game this year. The player rankings are so far off compared to every other service

Am I the only one who feels there's a decent chance Conditt might redshirt his freshman year? We'll have 2 experienced 5's with bodies that are ready for the XII, and plenty of depth at the 4 as well. I wouldn't be surprised if he took the year to gain some weight so he's ready for our league. Perhaps he's better than I'm giving him credit for though...
Do not know if it will happen, betting probably not, but it makes a ton of sense.

My guess is we are done with Harris. I would think if we have a Transfer we will take a transfer or a Juco to not have to replace a 5 man class in 5 years. That is what prohm hated about all the kids that graduated. So If he can have a Juco or grad transfer come in it would be way better. Don't get me wrong. Love Harris.

No offense but I'd be shocked if all 5 of those guys stayed all 4 years. Let's be honest it just doesn't happen that much in CBB anymore. There would be at least 1 transfer.
