I really wouldn't be too worried if I was you guys. Thelwell is the only player on Iowa who can break down a defense (to an extent) but Fran loves himself some Brock Harding. When Brock has flashed it's been against lower quality opponents. ISU will fluster the hell out of him but Fran will stick with him. Iowa has basically no one that can create their own shot. Payton loves to force shots even when he's not hitting. It actually drives me crazy. Payton has been bad this year and given how good ISU is on defense I think Payton will struggle mightily (but he will still keep shooting; I'm thinking 4-20 seems about right). Owen is good but if he gets into early foul trouble Fran will sit him forever and Owen's backups are Brauns and Mulvey LOL. Traore is intriguing but he's struggled with injuries. I'm anticipating a final score somewhere in the neighborhood of ISU 84 Iowa 65. I don't think the game will be in question by the time the first half is over.
Nice reverse psychology

Respectfully, couldn't disagree more.

I think he's a suckeye through and through, and every bit of "non-negativity" or perceived positivity towards Iowa State is complete BS. He hates Iowa State with passion and does nothing but talk sh*t and degrade Iowa State in his personal circles. The type that shouts "go h*wks* on vacation in Mexico, that calls us 'little brother' because it makes him feel cool, the type that has this undeserved/unearned sports-arrogance about them, the giant doucher that screams "Rose Bowl! Rose Bowl!" as a news anchor on f*cking SportsCenter after doing the highlights of the Iowa-Iowa State basketball game in December of 2014. Goodness, to this day, I cannot think of a douchier thing a suckeye media person has ever done, maybe other than Ross Peterson's batsh*t whiny rant on KXNO (I think that same season) about Cyclone fans not thinking Iowa deserved to be ranked #3 in the country (which was great because Cyclone fans were correct; Fran crashed down the stretch like he always does and their "Top 5 basketball team" was obsolete in March).

I like Jon Miller too. I really don't care if someone is just an honest fan, if I was an Iowa fan I'd like Williams, Walters, Heft & Blum for same reasons. I don't even mind listening to Iowa radio guys, it's funny.

What annoys me are some local media like that Sears kid being some massive over the top Iowa fan and pretending to be a professional buttoned up reporter. That guy sucks big time. That describes MOST of the print media from the state's papers and in my opinion is part of why they dried up as ISU fandom grew in state.

I was told last night at the WBB game that no one cares about IA MBB.

The ideal solution would be that Iowa wins wrestling and WBB every year, and ISU wins football and MBB every year.

Both teams would win the sports they care about most and everyone would be 100% happy especially during the mens NCAA tournament Iowa fans don't care about. We just need an ISU win tonight and all fans will be totally happy this year.

People have dove into the last 4 losses, but I’m not sure how much stock to put into the Prohm era CyHawk games. Even when we won it never seemed like we got up for it. The 2019 home loss was an embarrassment effort wise.

2016 had no business losing, but sounds like the team was a little too overconfident. I trust TJ to keep the guys more grounded than SP could.

2018 was winnable too, but Wigginton, Solo and Lard being out didn’t help. And Iowa ended up having a solid team that year. Whatever.

2020 - no explanation needed. Fran’s most talented team against ISUs worst team in recent memory, if not all time.

2022 - still in early Otz era where we were offensively challenged and had to win with defense. Combined with a start to the game where everything went right for Iowa and nothing went right for us. We quickly got into a hole we didn’t have the horses to dig out of.

I trust this years team is more talented on both sides of the ball to win. At worst if they don’t win it’s not going to be an embarrassing blowout like the previous games. Just have to hope we’re locked in and not too much weird rivalry **** goes down.

14,998 in attendance for a late start (8:00pm), week night game last night in Carver. They said it wasn't possible for the men.
Let's see how the hok men do with a 6:30 start tonight.;):mccaffery:

Iowa fandom (what’s left of it) puts a LOT of stock in that nose dive at end of Prohm era. If you look at it since Fran/Fred took over and ignore that brief period these programs aren’t even close, it’d be like comparing the state’s football programs to Alabama.

When you only play every away other year that's hardly crazy in college basketball. 16 was an upset, 18 and 22 teams were pretty close to each other iowa state was little better but Iowa was at home. Hardly upsets. 20 Iowa was of course lot better. I don't think theres anything to crazy about this.. Road football team winning last 4 is much more surprising imo

Only one of those teams that lost over in IC were what I would call good...

Yep. Agreed. Also if Chris Williams trolled Iowa the way Hassell trolls ISU, Williams would be getting death threats from that fanbase.

We didn't have Hunter in 2022. He was at Texas. We had Tamin as a freshman PG who was a baby at the time.

2016: Senior led back court but our front court was up in the air with zero reliability. We went 8-30 from three and only shot 9 FTs.

2018: One of the most talented teams we've had but incredibly flawed. Horrible defense mixed with an abundance of other issues (Cam Lard hadn't played until that game & Wigginton didn't play due to a foot injury).

2020: Good God we sucked.

2022: We know how bad we were offensively and it reared its ugly head that day. Went 3-22 from 3 and shot 7 FTs.

Most of these losses have one thing in common and that's Iowa State laying brick after brick from three. This team is too damn good to settle.

Definitely agree. If we shoot below 30% from three and put up 25 or more, we will lose tonight. Add onto that if we get 10 or less FT attempts, we will also lose.

Iowa was 12/23(!) from 3 in that 2022 game. (ISU was 3/22 lol). If they do that tonight they’ll win and we can only roll our eyes and tip our caps. As Williams has said this won’t be a bad loss. We just move on with much bigger fish to fry down the road.

I've said it before but it's also not a bad loss since it's at a rival and Iowa's likely at least bubbleish.

If they win they can have at it while they go on to lose some random home game to a bad team later on.

If we want to be a 1 seed come march this is one we have to have.

My wife's company decided to do an impromptu Christmas party at the last minute and picked tonight at 6 to do it :mad::mad:. They've only done one Christmas party in the 7 years or so that she has worked there. Got that news right after the Big 12 championship game, which was really the icing on that **** sandwich of a day.

So I'm mostly out here pretending that the game isn't happening.

I want this one bad. I want it just as bad as I wanted the football game. I hate Iowa and their fans and beating them in Iowa City in football and basketball will bring me so joy. That's from a personal side. From my fan side, you're playing a Q1 game and it will help for seeding purposes, not to mention keeping us in the conversation for best team in the country.

I've been worrying about this too. I've almost wondered if we should start out in straight man. We are more athletic than them and should be able to guard them that way. If we prevent them from getting off to a good start, then start trapping.

Man I don't know. Last year our defense had Iowa so freaking flustered. What doesn't get talked about enough is that when you are able to speed teams up even the wide open 3's from skip passes or quick reversals feel contested. Iowa getting hot from three will only matter if we can't score. We should be able to get enough stops and score enough points to pull away in this one. The key is to not let Iowa get up by double digits in the first 10 minutes. If you put Iowa in a position where they just need to trade baskets with you it's tough to come back when they are "on". This Iowa team has been susceptible to significant scoring droughts too where I feel like Iowa State is so dang balanced we have multiple ways to stop a run.

Yeah we're a lot better than those teams you just mentioned. If we play well we should win handily but if we go in there and act like we don't really want to be there, we will lose.

Fortunately TJ's teams rarely give you that kind of vibe. The last couple years typically when we lose it just isn't our night.
